I had mentioned that i was going to try coaching little kids (6-9) so i Could get them off on the right foot with fundamentals, etc.
Well they only had enough for (3) teams and had (3) coaches already, so they made me the “age director” kind of overseeing all (3) teams, but not running anything or making any decisions.

Well the (3) coaches dont want the kids pitching or catching “thats too much at this age”, “it will slow the game down too much” “whats the rush with making them pitch?”, one of them doesn’t even want coach pitch, she wants them all to use the tee. Another one only wants one base at a time while the tee lady wants them to go for extra bases. One coach reads the batting order once and expects them to renember it. They all want everyone in the field with no one on the bench (no catcher).

Last night we played with a girl fielding at the circle, 1B, 3B and 3 MIs and 5 or 6 OF. If you saw the movie “Trading Places”, after the game i was like Dan Ackyroyds character in the Santa suit outside the liquor store. The kids are not the problem.......i guess they never are.

ANY advice anyone cares to throw my way will be greatly appreciated.

a) Allow one extra outfielder....so, you would have 10 kids playing the field. The coach has to rotate players in and out of the field.
b) Everyone bats.
c) Coach pitch from any distance the coach wants.
d) 3 outs or 5 runs per inning.
e) No extra bases once the ball is in possession of an infielder.

HA! This all sounds about right.
6-9 is a HUGE difference.

For Rec League.
At 6 coach pitch - the kids will never throw a strike. infield positions are set, everyone else in the outfield. All players play infield by the 3rd inning. (on coaches to make that happen. Runner on 3rd has to be batted in. Pitcher has to have one foot inside the circle. One base on an over throw.

8 Still coach pitch - Infield positions with 4 outfielders. Runner has to be batted in from 3rd. Runner can advance to 3rd on overthrow, but can not score. All players must play infield by the 3rd inning.

10u rec Modified coach pitch - 10 players in the field. Runner must be batted in from 3rd.

I have always been a fan of going through the entire order each inning. You spend less time going on and off the field and more hitting and fielding opportunities.

Keep in mind that you are trying to get them ready to play at the next level (age division), not make it easier for parents to watch right now.

Big age gap, either you make rules based on youngest group, 6u, or you have different rules based on age of player.

6u. Coach pitch, but hit off tee after 3rd swing and miss. No Strike outs. Entire order bats each inning.
8u. Coach pitch, 4 pitches, 3 swings. 3 swings with no hit, out.
10u. Player pitch, with coach relief after 4 balls. 3 strikes = out.

6U- 10 in the field using an extra outfielder. We would do coach pitch for 3 pitches from 30' and then switch to a tee. Once we reached the half way point of the season the girls moving up to 8U the next season lost the tee for the rest of the year and USSSA All Stars was all coach pitch.

8U- Player pitch for the first two innings. Once a player walked or hit four batters a coach came in to pitch. After that point we went to all coach pitch to keep the game moving. Same set up on defense.

Agree 6-9 is a huge age difference.

For 8 and 9 year olds kid pitch, no walks allowed. After 4 balls on a batter the coach comes in to pitch, player keeps strikes from the kid pitcher and any pitch a coach throws is a strike. Pitcher comes back for the next batter and trys again.
