Once the lead is 15 or more, subtly walk off base(s)...base coach quietly tells base umpire to look for it...runner casually steps off and trots back to dug out after called out. If done correctly, it is almost hard to recognize.

Our high school games require you to get the other team out 15 times for the game to end (5 inning 10 run rule)...if a team cannot get the other team out...mercy is required...nothing good in a 20+ margin.

This is what we do. Unless run differential is important to seeding we will always do this if we are up big. We will also move our defensive players around to their "secondary" positions and then as it gets more lopsided we put them somewhere they are not used to playing.

Fortunately stepping off the bag is accepted and encouraged in our area when we get outmatched teams, so we don't have to deal with all this macho coach BS about 'learning', or working on things, or 'teaching the girls to get outs' or batting opposite hand or 'disrespect' or whatever. I think one of the factors here in this happening is it can be so hot here, leaving a team fielding for 45 minutes plus is basically abuse.

You get your required lead, you step off. HS you have to get to 15 by 3 - in general if we have a weak opponent we will get 8 in the first, step off, get 7 in the 2nd and be done in the third. That way the poor other team isn't in the field for 60 minutes while they walk everyone or make 8 errors or get hit around or a combination of the three.

We had one idiot coach 2 years ago run up a score for no reason in a pool game in a 12U USSSA division. I think the final was 30-0 He got a call from the state director and was told if it happened again he would be suspended. It happened again - he was suspended for a month.

for the weak.... joking

been on both sides of fairly lopsided games (nothing like 30-0 though). Up by 7-10, call off dogs (ie no stealing, less aggressive baserunning, switch fielders around, sit players who normally do not). Up by 10-15, use developing pitchers (as long as they can find zone, everyone hates walkfests), have power hitters bunt, let girls working on slapping try it, bunt with two strikes, let girls who have worked on it try and switch hit (not everyone). If opposition is offended, they were probably going to be offended anyway, probably no way to not offend them unless you lose or win by one on walk off play.

There is one high school in particular in my area that is a definite walk-over for everyone - even the other weak teams. Everyone knows them. I doubt that any of their girls have played softball other than on the HS team, or if they have it was a very weak rec league team.

What most opposing coaches do is leave their top players out, and play their bench players. Some will bring up girls from JV, and I believe they agree to set a run limit just to keep things moving. That avoids the issue of whether to step off early and all that. The score is still lopsided - I don't think that team has scored a run since I've been aware of them - but not as bad as it could be.

When my daughters played in HS, their varsity coach wouldn't report the score to the newspaper, which I thought was a class move. It wasn't an accomplishment to win, so why make a big deal about it? I've seen others, however, who wrote it up like it was a regional final.

Now, you might be tempted to feel bad for the girls on that weak team. But the times I've seen them they look like they're having the most fun you could have on a softball field. I think they're just happy to be out there and playing for their school, or for each other, which I give them a lot of credit for. I don't think they take it too seriously. But they field a team every years regardless, so good for them.

I saw a score last night that was 38-0. But only 26 of the 38 runs were earned. I saw the losing team gave up 24 walks. The winning team might have better results in post season awards this year.
