DD told me at one of the tryouts on the first day a girl showed up wearing deck shoes and a new glove.

At DD's tryouts last fall, they had a couple of girls who didn't even have gloves. They made the JV team - nobody was cut. As has been said, there is a huge range in turnout for HS ball.

Are seniors allowed to play JV?

JV is for developing Varsity players. Seniors should not be taking spots from younger players. Those seniors will never be on the varsity. My feeling is unless there is an extra spot JV isn't even for 11th graders. Would you rather develop a player for 2-3 maybe even 4 years of varsity or a player with 1?

I can vouch for CB. His school has an excellent softball program. Our school is usually happy if we just get out of there with a loss and don't get short gamed lol. I am seriously envious and I know our coach would be too, that they had 30 girls show up that want to play.

Side note...CB, I have to work the day our schools meet, so I won't get to witness the carnage.

I missed this. That is too bad. I haven't seen our schedule but I think this game will be at our place since we were at your place last year. I don't know about the "carnage." I think your girls are very competitive. In fact, I admire a lot of what has happened in your program given I've known the program for most of my life.

After our 3rd day, we had cuts tonight. We had some great tryouts but no matter how much you know you are doing the right thing by cutting some players, it doesn't make it easier. I feel so badly for those young ladies.

We were outside for 2 of the 3 days. We hit off of live pitching, we fielded OF balls off of a bat and a machine, we did various skills work including various throws. We timed the bases and a 40 yard dash. For our hitting, we did various drills of which some were complex and one was as simple as throwing a ball up and hitting it into the net from about 8 feet out and with a target line in the net. For the first time, we used a machine to pitch so that we could see some consistent swings with balls in the zone. Personally, I think I took over 5 pages of notes, comments, names, ... We had 5 coaches there two of the three days. Pitchers pitched and catchers caught and threw. Finally, we wrapped up with a very complicated infield drill where multiple balls are in play and so, we could see just how quickly some of these players pick up on stuff.

So, again, I thought that this was a very good tryout. When we had to cut this time, it was tough because we had some players who were pretty good that didn't make the team. There were a lot of tears. We did speak to every player face to face about whether they made the team or not and each player received a typed out critique from the first two days of tryouts. It will be hard to sleep tonight for me and I know those players feel so much worse than I. I hate hurting these kid's feelings.

Tomorrow, we get after it.

This is a great thread CB. Good luck on this year's season!

Seems insane to cut down to 22 to make 2 teams for school ball. If you only have 22 come out, that's one thing, but to purposely narrow it down to that seems scary. Grades, mandatory music programs, injuries, the future, etc. would make you think you want more than that around.
