I know it depends but if possible "in general". No one on base.

SS I like a little behind or on baseline.

2nd I like a foot or 2 behind baseline.

I do not like either near the grass.

Baseball is different, 2nd I want foot touching grass.

I disagree. I want 4-5 paces behind baseline. My SS will catch bloopers over 3B head and grounders up the middle if she is deep enough.

Just have to teach them to charge in on balls hit to them.

How far is SS from OF grass or is she on it?
Depends on the fields around here. We have some deep in fields, that's why I do steps from the baseline.

Most fields they are 3-4 paces from the grass.

Haha - I though maybe you were asking how deep your player pool should be at those positions.
DD's old coach has 6 girls listed as SS and 4 girls listed as 2nd base. LOL - not one girl has OF listed as her primary. This is a 14U team.
Thankfully DD has moved on. I can see the future on her old team, fighting, drama and frustration over positions. No thank you!

It depends on age but 12U and above need to play behind the base paths. Too many bloopers. For me I like them to play as deep as they can while making the outs. If you have a SS with a great arm she can play a step or 2 farther back than one without a great arm. Need to work on charging the ball. You will give up a few hits on soft hits but should make up for it overall. Keep in mind it changes with the speed of the batter. If a good slapper is up you need to move in a bit.

I typically tell my infielders - find your base path - SS/2B at least three steps behind, 1B/3B at least three steps ahead (just as a base). Then we can adjust more for bunts or deeper hits from there.

Exact same player, I think they can play deeper at 2nd then SS.

(1st and 3rd I am ignoring right now, you are more aggressive then me)

I have a slow 1st baseman, that cant field bunts. So I play her behind the baseline about 3 steps. 2nd baseman plays the line and SS plays 5 steps off of base line. 3rd baseman can tell you what you had for breakfast!
