I struggle with how 2nd plays closer in then SS.
2nd is usually a weaker player than the rest of the infield. That's why I play them deep too. If SS & 2nd are equal, 2nd can be in some because hits to the right side are generally weaker than hits to the left. Same reason least experienced player goes to right field.

I don't know what level you are playing, but I've found that not having a good 2B will kill you.

A small independent middle school where every girl that shows for tryouts makes the team and a C level travel team where we do fundraising to get tournament fees.

We don't have tryouts for positions, too few kids. When planning defense, we find the 2 toughest kids for catcher and 3rd. Good gloves and arms, but not the fastest.

1st base, we look for the best glove only. It's OK if throwing is not very strong or accurate.

For middle infielders, the quickest with a good glove and stronger arm goes to SS. Lesser arm goes to 2nd.

This is what I mean about putting our weaker infielder at 2nd. Her glove is not as good as 1st, her arm can't match 3rd and she's not as quick as SS. 2nd is generally the last position we fill based on our perceived requirements for other positions. Hopefully 2nd is a well rounded player.

Did I climb out of this hole or am I only digging it deeper?

Not in a hole. Makes sense with what you have. I will say though if you ever get a good 2B you will be amazed at how much easier it is to coach.

I agree with KC, second is usually the last spot to fill on an infield. She has a short throw, can be slower than SS, fills weaker (off the end of bat hits) . When you play girls that can really hit, most of those get around on the ball super quick. So pitching them inside and moving the 2nd closer to 2nd base (hole) works very well for my team. almost like a shift to the power side. When you play A level and some bigger high school ball, all positions are strong. And all positions are important. I'm constantly telling my SS and 2nd to not be afraid or "pissed off" about playing outfield. IF they want to play in college, they will be outfielders. They are too fast and quick not too play somewhere. and they are only rising Freshman.

At the start of last season our SS was 2 paces behind the baseline, we were getting beat on those damn bloopers. We moved her back to 4-5 steps behind the line (once we got her to start charging the slow rollers it was a good fit). She was getting the bloopers and getting to the balls hit in the hole. My 2B also plays 4-5 steps back, sometimes s bit deeper.
