So Cal
Same practices over 2 years is a sign of a lazy coach who isn't learning each season like he/she expects his players to do. This is another example of why I think it's important, every year, to look at possible other teams and organizations, attend tryouts, teams that cut players, and learn from more experienced, paid coaches who are students of the game. Complacency is a team killer....You only have a finite number of years in this sport, get the most out of it.

I definitely agree about the learning part. There's always something more to learn about this game, and always a skill that needs improving. If you're not learning, it's time to look for another place.

Ding, ding! You win! This is it exactly! Complacency...that is the word I've been searching for to describe DD's team this past year. She just accepted an offer from another team - scary...and exciting all at once!

I agree with the previous posts, the quality of the practices are very important - especially if you are in TB and essentially paying for them. I am willing to put up with a fair amount of the BS associated with TB, but when it comes to the quality of the practices the girls better be developing their skills and softball IQ, otherwise it's time to go somewhere else.

I have found that most have drills they do "everyday" and then it's time to work on their weak areas. The pitchers and catchers should work together every practice and there should be some type of hitting in every practice. There should be variety and a strategy to keep the girls engaged, different types of games and challenges usually work well. The other thing that often gets overlooked is simulating game time pressure. Girls can often perform very well when there is no pressure during practice but come game time they struggle under the pressure.

As a former HS head baseball coach. I composed 5 practices on index cards with every stituation possible built into it and also 30 minutes of oprn space. That way if we needed to work on something specific we could and stay on course. We practiced 5 days a week before the season and once the season started we would just do them until we completed all 5. Worked awesome for us.

we practice our 12u and 14u together and most of the time we have at least 4 coaches there. We always start with proper throwing and stick'em drills. Then we split into pitchers/catchers and IF and OF . if the OF is hitting ( one coach has 4 tees and rotates the girls, inside, outside, middle and slap/bunt) one coach with pitcher and catchers, two coaches with IF (30-45 min rotate) at the end we do situation drills, and always end with runing the bases and getting leads.
