I know I have posted this before but it is one of my many pet peeves and has already happened a few times this year.

Runner on 3rd, fly ball to OF.

Are you going home if fielder catches It?

If yes, stay on base.
If no, lead off.

Drives me nuts when runner retreats to bag then runs home after OF catches ball.

Not here.
Depends how deep in the outfield if runner can score. Also depends if less than 2 outs. 2 outs the runner on 3rd goes. If less than 2 outs. I believe runner should remain on bag though. The 3rd base coach should and will yell go when he wants the runner to go. If caught runner on bag will go when the coach yells go. If dropped the runner can jog home. No reason for runner to be off bag unless 2 outs.

If less than 2 outs stay glued to the bag. If it is caught you can decide if you should advance or not. If it is dropped you can probably jog home.

If there are 2 outs you better be well past home plate when the ball is caught.

Yup, yup, yup...except the decision to tag and advance should be made well before the ball is actually caught (how deep is it going, to which field, do we know if OFer has strong arm, etc.). Deep fly ball we're telling runner to get ready to go and giving her the "go" on the catch. Even if we are not going to go (not deep enough, cannon arm, etc.) our runner will usually take a couple of explosive steps on the catch to see if we can induce a bad throw home.

If less than two outs the runner should be on the third base bag. If the outfielder catches the ball you are tagged up to score. If she drops it you are going to score anyway. What drives me crazy is runners who are a quarter of the way down the line and then the outfielder makes a running catch and the runner then tries to retreat to tag up. By that time the outfielder has thrown the ball in and you've lost a potential run. What do you actually gain by leading off? Absolutely nothing. What have you lost by not tagging up every time with less than 2 outs? Potentially a game.

Am I the only one seeing this done wrong every game?

You aren't the only one. At 12u, our team practices tagging up often, and then in games, many girls are clueless, even when the 3B coach says tag up on a fly ball. It's the one thing that makes our 3B coach become unglued.

No they should retreat to base while ball is in the air.

I see now that I misread your intent with your original statement. I agree that retreating to the base should happen while the ball is in the air, not after the ball is caught.
