We had kids on our 14U team that didn't know how to tag up. One thought that you just had to go back and touch the base and then you could run. Another thought if she caught it you couldn't run. These were kids who had played since they were 7 and a couple had played HS in the spring the year before.

Another thing that I see all the time are on clear foul balls to the OF or near out of play the players go halfway. Get back and tag in case they catch it. You can't go anywhere anyway.

If the runner took a lead-off on pitch release (as they should), wouldn't they need to retreat to 3B before running home after the catch?

I thought maybe I was missing something. I thought the exact same thing. Certainly the girl should be leading off with the release of the ball from the pitchers hand. There will be some delay until the runner recognizes that the ball is headed to the outfield. Once the runner recognizes the fact she should be evaluating (or 3b coach) how deep the ball is going, direction, etc, and retreating to the bag if she believes it is deep enough to score on a fly.

It's also important for ALL baserunners to tag up on a foul fly ball regardless of how deep it is with less than two outs. A lot of times you can catch the fielder with the ball sleeping or have 3B or home uncovered after the catch.

Agreed, even if you don't run drawing throws from odd angles can often lead to bad ones. I think much of the problem with tagging up stems from teaching at young ages to freeze on a fly ball versus trying to determine what it's going to do.
