Several years ago I served as the softball commissioner at our local youth league. I was interested in long term development. So, 8u was 1/2 kid pitch and 1/2 coach pitch. By 10u its all kid pitch and basically high school rules, the only difference was no DTS, ball size, and the pitching distance...everything else was the same. The players were all light years more advanced than their competition by 12u...about 90% of them have went on to play high level travel. By next year our local high school will have a freshman class of 6 girls who all play A, B, or Gold level TB... and 5 more the year after that!
Bottom line is to make sure the youth leagues are looking towards the future in player development, and not just going through the motions in the present.
