10u rec coach. our league has the teams in each age division keep track of win against other teams in our league. the team with the best record at the end of the season that coach gets to be the head coach for the all star team of there age division. it was coming down between my team and one other team. on any given day one team can beat the other. well end of the season is upon us and we are within 1 game of each other. but yet I find myself questioning if I'm the best choice for the all star team. we have already had tryouts and only 3 of the girls from my spring team tried out with two making the team. I have never coached any of the other girls that made the team as the majority came up from 8u and have never played with my DD or myself. I have more 10u rec and 10u allstar experience than the other coach, but not having a rapport with any of the girls on the team other than the two from my team and I know he is a really good coach I talked with him and told him that if he wanted the head coach spot he could have it. he immediately asked me to be his asst. coach and he said it is our team. I only want what is best for the girls and my DD, but I cant help but wonder if I could have done the job.....

Work together. You will figure out what gifts each of you bring to the team. I have seen many teams that have a Head Coach only in name while the assistant does all the heavy lifting. At the end of the day the girls won't care who was head coach, asst coach, team mom, score keeper, etc.

We have a similar rule. It is place in case no one wants to coach the Team, you get stuck with it if no one volunteershould.

I am big with having 1 person in charge, which sounds like thay would be you. You should be able to come up with some tasks for them.

The fact that you are questioning means you have some level of self awareness. That tells me, there is something different in you than in many coaches. You can do it. However it ends up, know that you can influence from any position because you are thinking players first.

Sounds like there is mutual respect there. Work with him, make sure you know your role...does he want you to run outfield/infield work hitting or pitching /catching?...at 10U you are probably OK but at 12U I had an agreement with my AC that I would let him work with my DD and I would work with his since neither of them listened to their own dad.

Having fun is #1 this is 10U rec after all; but if push does come to shove remember he is the Head Coach and let him run things his way as long as safety is not an issue.

You wavered on it, and offered him the spot. It sounds to me like his offer to make it a joint effort is pretty awesome.

not having a rapport with any of the girls on the team other than the two from my team ...

Not sure why the 8U's wouldn't be trying out for their own team. Or maybe the question should be why are the 8U's so good that they can beat out a 10U? Or why are the 10U's not good enough to beat out an 8U?

But my real point is that the other coach is in the same boat - he's likely never coached the 2 from your team, or any of the 8U's. I think you're imposing criteria on yourself (familiarity with each and every girl on the team) that are likely not on anyone else's list of "what makes the best All-Star coach".

I meant by 8u coming up is that most of the girls played 8u last year with him. most are first year 10u players that were in 8u last year.

We had 4 coaches that came together for our all star rec team last year.
Worked out great. We surprised some travel teams. Did a few tournaments.

Last year I learned that one of the worst things that can happen in an all-star team is having coaches who can't set aside their egos for the sake of the girls.

It sounds like you and the other coach are doing the exact opposite of that, which will be great for the girls.
