So my lead off slapper stole second last night. SS caught the ball in front of the bag and my runner slide wide towards OF, got hand on bag and was safe. Good base running and a great slide...

THEN a few plays later there is a break in the action. The ump in the field tells me "Hey coach, tell ya little girl that she has to slide directly to the bag. She cant slide wide. I shouldve called her out but I let it slide this time"... I said "What? She cannot slide wide to avoid the tag?" He said "nope its in the rule book"... I replied "I may need to research that rule"... I didnt make a deal about it, because she was safe, but I am skeptical....

I'm aware that you cannot slide wide to take out the field or something like that, but am I wrong in this situation? I have a strong feeling that I am not.

I am sure Comp will provide an official response, but I think your field umpire may have enjoyed April 20th (4-20) a little too much...

Defense is trying hard to get her out, she is not allowed to make things difficult for them.

Forget the obvious calling her out, I would have thrown her out of the game.

Hey...I'm going to beat Comp to it for once.....

Here the rule:

NFHS 2-52: ...if the runner slides, the runner shall be within reach of the base with either hand or a foot when the slide is completed.

Well since our runner was able to safely touch the base, the ump was clearly smoking that sticky icky

OP did the right thing.

Thank the blue, tell base runner she did great and do the same thing next time, get the rule book ready to show the ump if he makes the wrong call.

What is a "rollover slide"?

You may call it something else...

It's a hook slide where the runner pulls the left hand back that they would normally touch the base with. As they slide next to the bag they rollover onto their stomach and touch the bag with their right hand. The tricky part is keeping that right hand on the base.

You have probably seen this a bunch of times in baseball and softball. Most people probably don't distinguish between the two slides and just call them both hook slides.
