Apply the Hanson Principle. How often do you see MLB base coaches do it? Not very.
No idea what OOJ is but I guess I may be one. Although, I agree that it's become pervasive at all amateur levels.

You nailed it riseball. The problem is less with the gesture, although it's annoying and unnecessary, and more about the inevitable "Don't let the base coach call the game for you." that comes after a close play goes against the defense.
I'll admit a cheer and clap on a close play to show I believe she was safe, but I do not use any umpiring gestures.
