This is one of those things I only discovered through experience: Make sure they're using gloves that aren't garbage (or brand new and stiff as a board).

This is especially true for younger ages, where half the glove options are $10 K-Mart specials. You'd be surprised how many bring that crap to a practice. It looks like they can't catch (and maybe some of them really can't), but a whole bunch of us would struggle with the gloves they're trying to use.

In a team practice, create a few lines and have coaches throw to them vs. having them throw to each other. Will remove fear, stop bad habits from forming and improve catching immensely.

Lots of good stuff here. One thing I learned was that when they are first starting out, it was best to do as Bubrox said is start out on the glove side and tell them where you are going to throw it and work on just that until they get it. Then work on thr backhand, or the pop up (right to them, no movement required). Instead of hitting IF and OF practice, I would throw IF /OF practice. I could make the ball go exactly where I wanted and help the player build confidence.

When DD's coach works with the girls who are having trouble catching, he puts them in front of a fence so they can't back up. He gets really close, gently lobbing the ball to them. He will also hold a ball in his hand and place it in the player's glove so they can feel where they want it to hit the glove and how it feels to close the glove around the ball.
