Have any of you coaches ever had a live pitcher inside a cage pitching to your batters? I have heard mixed reviews about this. Some saying it's too dangerous, some saying its 40 ft (we are 12u) either way. We need more live pitching hitting practice, but we are regulated to indoor right now. Any suggestions or comments??

The problem is hard hit balls coming off the nets back at the pitcher. I would suggest using a screen.

Highly recommend it. Good for pitchers and hitters. Pitchers job is to get the batter out - not just throw meatballs (batting practice). We do "at bats" and put a catcher in and call signs as well. Good live game simulation. Distance is the same inside or out and pitchers need to learn to field their position. If you put them behind a screen then you get the lazy on reaction time etc. FWIW - my experience and 2 cents.

My DD has hit off a live pitcher in a cage, one that we set up, just 1 on 1. It was fine. She felt a little claustrophobic, so a wider cage is preferred, but it was OK. We used a screen.

Use a screen.

If you use the screen just make sure it's far enough over because we had one last year that severely dislocated her finger when her follow through hit the screen. No pitching for almost 3 weeks. And then she wasn't herself for quite some time.

My younger two DD's pitching instructor has them pitch to her hitting students about every other month indoors in a cage. I love it, my DD's get some free quality indoor pitching time with someone else catching for them. They wear a face mask and the only time they throw it down the middle is when the girls are bunting. They also pitch to there teams as well. It makes me a little nervous when they are throwing to there teams, I generally like to be around when they do. This is really a win-win for both the hitters and the pitcher. As we get closer to the start of the season we do it a little more often to get everyone use to a live situation.
