Is a high school coach allowed to lift weights with the players in a non mandatory situation?

I Don't know, but based on what I do know I think that depends on the rules that apply and may vary from state to state. Public school or private? (rules may vary). Also, very important- is it making anyone uncomfortable? while an activity may be legal, that doesn't make it right. if some players are getting creeped out, let the AD know.

Sounds like a very slippery slope to try and cross. A lot would also depend, as obbay above says, on who the coach is coaching - if it's my softball girls or another team. There are plenty of other places for a coach to lift weights. If they are trying to model proper form for a player, then that's absolutely permissible. Other than that, it falls into a very gray area I don't think most coaches would want to venture to.

This happens at our school all the time. Coaches take turns supervising the weight room and will lift right along with the student athletes. Some will hit the exercise bike or elliptical and will observe from there.

My daughter has never complained about a coach lifting with them

If you are lifting, how can you be focusing on the player's development?
If the purpose of lifting is to develop the player through strength conditioning, don't you think it is important that you are there to monitor, encourage, assist in proper form and technique, and ensure proper weight for the specific exercise?

I would caution against lifting while the team is lifting. Weight lifting is one area where supervision in a must, not a suggestion.
