So I coach and my daughter is on the team we are in the middle school phase were you play all the sports to play and learn. Now we are entering the 8th grade and the coach is pushing cross country running on my daughter. I personally do not think its a good idea we don't need the long distance on a softball field and I think she is already too skinny and I think it will keep her that way while I'm trying to put some muscle on her. What are other coaches opinion on cross country for a softball player?

It won't hurt anything and can teach kids how to push through it when you are tired and hurting.

One of the players on my HS team hated running etc. This summer, she has decided to run. In talking to her the other day, she said that the difference is, while she is running, she is really thinking the game of softball and what she needs to do to get better. Right now, I'd say she has lost 40 lbs and has really changed herself.

DD is 16 and skinny but really muscular. She plays soccer and goes to a personal trainer in addition to softball. Playing a secondary sport or going to a trainer or even just to the gym is beneficial to any athlete.

Does your daughter want to do it? Key fact omitted, IMO.

Upper body strength is very very important to cross country runs. Some of them look scrawny but you would be supprised how strong most of them are.

I think I can make a case for almost any sport being good for SB.

Wow CB, that's impressive! Good for her!

Right now she is on the fence she only wants to do it if it will improve her in softball. Her #1 things is playing college softball and she only wants to do things to help improve softball but her middle school coaches are just really pushy cause she was the only long distance run in her grade for track last year.

Keep in mind fast twitch muscle development comes from explosive movements not jogging. IMO, softball players need fast twitch muscles.

I think joining the swim team is the best off-season sport for a softball player.

Low -impact sport (read: very low risk of knee/ankle injury), and also a "symmetrical sport" which helps to even-out the one-sidedness repetitive use that is a big part of softball.

I wish my own DD would heed this advice, but she is a volleyball player. :-/
