Not sure if I just need to vent or if I need advice. Wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar. Two years ago my daughter and I joined an organization. She was asked to join and I was asked to AC. A friend of mine was an AC on this team also. It's a small, "B" level organization and not a high level B team by any means.

The first year was good. We were decent in tourneys but didn't win any. My friend and I were aggravated with the HC's game decisions and his lack of communication. We pretty much ran practices and did the base coaching but he made sure his daughter played where he wanted. We decided to stay and had tryouts. He decide to cut one of the better players because she was too immature.

We had a horrible season and the aggravation continued with communication, lack of practices, and even had a practice where everyone showed up and we had no field. Many of us drive an hour to practice. Parents began getting upset and talking to me. They told me that they will not play for the HC again. They like the organization but not the HC. The only way they stay is if I take over the team. I cannot coach with him again and don't want to abandon the team. Not sure what to do. My daughter loves the team and the other girls but doesn't want to play for the HC. The parents all want to tell the HC that he is out and I am in. I don't feel that is the right thing and am not comfortable asking him to step down.

Anyone else ever have this? It has been stressing me out for weeks.

I would love for his daughter to stay. That would be my preference. Every time I approach him with an issue I have regarding him he gets super defensive. Example: last year we asked him to text us and let us know if he was going to miss a scheduled practice. We would show up and his daughter would be there but he wouldn't. No equipment, no nothing. His response was that he is busy and that is something we just have to deal with.

I like the guy as a person but not as HC. This year he doesn't really do anything but handle money and spirit wear and make sure his daughter gets to play all positions. His communication with the team about practices and tournaments sucks. We usually get the tournament schedule from him the Wednesday before the tournament starts on Friday.

Also, the other AC and his daughter are leaving and taking the year off.

This is the time when the organization (who should be aware of the situation or its not doing its job) either makes the decision that the HC goes or you go find another org/team.

The bad news is that there is no formal qualification process to become a head coach, so you win some, you lose some. The good news is you are free to change travel ball teams whenever necessary, which usually helps weed out the bad ones by 14U.

If you manage to gain control of the team, you might as well plan on his daughter going elsewhere. If not, you will probably have some major issues with the former HC. Even if you can convince him to give up control my bet is it will be detrimental if he hangs around.

Sounds like it is simply ultimatum time and especially given the time of year sooner and not later.

Go to whoever is running this organization and simply say " I know this sucks and I don't want to do this but my daughter and I really love the organization and team but unless we get a new HC (and I am willing to step up) for the team we are leaving...and I can't promise that others won't be going as well and given that tryouts are in a week or two I'll give you the night to think it over and get back to me."

Then either take the bull by the horns and run with your team or start heading to different team tryouts.
