Thanks. I will definitely add some of these to my stats. What about things like pitch counts to track the efficiency of your pitchers and the number of pitches per at bat?

briand - I have never kept pitch count or # pitches per at bat. I do keep stats on K% - BB% - hit% - Batting Average against.

I do like keeping track of 1st pitch strikes. I count the pitches but thats after a tournament, I don't keep track during games.

I would say that the most important statistics to track are the ones that you really emphasize in your practices and those that match your style.

For example I'm REALLY aggressive on bases so I always tracked stolen bases attempts, extra bases where runner pushed it, dive backs to base etc.

If you really stress sacrificing yourself for the team, then you might want to really track SAC bunts and bring those stats up a lot.

If you really emphasize the basic fundamentals like hitting behind the runner, you would want a stat for balls hit to the right side of the field with runner(s) on 2nd or 3rd etc.

Or you might want to track the number of solid hits to the opposite field.

Make up statistical categories if need be to fit your style and what goals YOU as a coach are trying to really emphasize. So that the things you review at the end of the year or mid-year actually match the things you "bark about" in practice all of the time.

Since DD is a pitcher, I do track pitches and do inning by inning strike/ball ratios. If the ratio of strikes to balls is above 60%, i know she is throwing well..

That is what I do with the pitch counts, keep strike/ball ratios and also average pitches per batter faced. I like druer's thought of using the stats that are emphasized throughout the season.

Baseball: Coaching Tools Here is a site I think is useful that I use on Stats and charts. My dd actually had what snocatzdad posted happen to her. She went 6-7 in two games of getting on base, but the coach at 12U only kept track of BA. He did not keep track of OB%. . So he moved her from the lead off spot to 7'th in the Batting order. They lost the next two games, because they were not scoring runs. Guess who lead the team in runs scored and SB. Looking at stats can get you in trouble, unless you are tracking the correct things.

Unlike Baseball, I like to track ROE as helping your OB%. IMO fast kids, and kids that put the ball in play a high percentage of the time, make defenses commit errors. Personally (especially for lead off position) I don't really care how they get on base, that is helping the team.

One of our coaches did stats a little too late last fall. We had a leadoff
that struggled with obp. He left her in that spot because she is so fast.
After she was moved to 8th, we scored more, and she hit better. Before the move her
obp was horrid, worse yet 50% K's. Her confidence grew after the move, and all other stats followed.
When we met for the 1st time this year, she admitted that leadoff is too much pressure,
and she prefers to bat lower. OBP is the bible, but again, we go with the 'hot' 9 in elimination

Especially for the slappers. They put so much pressure on defenses and the margin of time to get a slapper out so small that "forced" errors often occur that hurt a slapper's BA and OBP. I generally try to give more leeway when scoring, you can tell a difference when the throw is hurried. Adding ROE to OBP is fair to everyone and takes scorekeeper judgment out of the equation (at least for OBP).
