That is baseball though, girls have masks.

With the high number of people on here with college aspirations you should be teaching them know how to protect themselves, because those masks come off at 18 in many cases. Not to mention the shots to the neck that is exposed or the thin bones of the wrist and hand that are right there...

Comp is correct and the batter does not have to make an attempt to get out of the way.

That is not exactly what I said, the rule now states the batter does not have to make an attempt to avoid the ball if it is entirely within the batters box. If the ball is not entirley within the batters box the batter must still make an attempt to avoid being hit. To be entirely within the box, the edge of the ball closest to the plate would have to be more than 6" away from the plate

ASA 8-1-F, Exception. If no attempt is made to avoid being hit, the batter will not be awarded 1st base unless it is ball 4.

NSA
EXCEPTION: If the batter makes no effort to avoid being hit by the pitched ball or if the umpire calls the pitched ball a strike, the ball striking the batter is disregarded, and the ball is dead. The pitched ball is a strike or ball depending on the location of the pitched ball.

USSSA, 2012 rule book had the same basic wording about the batter must make an attempt to avoid being hit. 2013 that wording was removed and replaced with the batter cannot purposely move to get hit.

they used to call it all the time but the word went out that no effort needed to be made and I haven't seen it called in two years in all three divisions and nationally.

I don't see how you can equate intentionally getting hit by a pitch and sliding. There are all kinds of plays that can result in injury but that doesn't make them the same. Having girls stand in the box to intentionally get hit by a pitch is bordering on abuse in my book. Your daughter's coach is probably so inept at teaching the fundamentals it's the only way he can get his players on base.

Coaches who yell at the girls and make a spectacle of themselves are without exception bad coaches. It's always more about them than the girls. They like the spotlight and the attention they get by yelling and berating. It makes the game a bummer and I wish those types of coaches would be asked to do something else.

You could make the same case for telling a girl to slide. A better case actually because more kids get hurt sliding than being hit by pitch. Taking one for tye team is as old as the game, just like sliding.

I'd rather have my daughter get hit in the head with a ball in softball then quite a few other parts of the body. Those helmets work pretty good. Its the rib shots that scare me.

I really don't think you would. Yes, the helmets do help protect the head; however, my DD has had concussions twice from getting beaned by a pitch. The concussion is caused by the brain moving around in the skull in reaction to a hit. That can happen, no matter how good the helmet is. She just had no bruise on the outside. Both times, the hit was taken by the earhole.

I believe you will find coaches all over the United States from 12uTB to the highest level of college softball that teach their girls how to take a hit and even PRACTICE getting hit. Some even teach to get in the throwing lane when running to a base. To label coaches that teach this as "inept", is proving your ignorance of competitive game play.

Without exception? Wow. Eugene meet Mediocre, Mediocre, pretty sure you already know Eugene.
