Rulebook says you must make an attempt to avoid the pitch. If a player chooses to take the hit, it's on them. The coach should not dictate that, imho.

Unless you just stand there on a changeup it's pretty easy to "make an attempt" and still get hit. Again, it's not for everyone but there are players out there who are willing to take a welt in exchange for a base.

If my daughter is having a bad day at bat, she prays to get HBP. Personally, I'm fine with it, if they know how to take the shot. There is free walks and paid walks. That's a paid walk which can lead to a winning run.

Learning how to take a pitch is part of the game. It needs to be done safely (IE take it on the rump/thigh etc.) but it is one of the ways to get on base. Watch college and pro and you will see those girls do not jump out of the way often, they take it. I remember at least two of the players on Tennessee trying to get hit by some of the inside pitches to get on base towards the end of one of the games after they were so unproductive with their bats. I don't approve of telling a kid to get hit by a pitch, but if there is one thrown to the correct body part you need to take it.

Wow, he tells her to get hit by an inside pitch so maybe he can get a baserunner? Unbelievable. Not near as bad as my dd's coach, he wants them to run full speed and then throw their bodies down and skid to the base. Sometimes it leaves a raspberry, sometimes it don't. I saw a girl do this same kind of thing the other day and she broke her ankle. Their should be some type of safety organization to monitor this stuff.

I love sarcasm. I'm raising a professional of my own so I can hear it all the time.

DD's nickname is BooBoo after getting hit 3 times in one game and sporting two bruises with seams. She will gladly roll up her pants or down her sock and show you the medals. She was a ball magnet as a first year 14 and last year only twice. She'd rather hit now.

Not entirely.....Depends on the ruleset, and on the location of the pitch.

I could provide a more definitive answer if I know what ruleset was being used.

Would it be rude to ask the Coach to step up to the plate and take a 55mph pitch to any part of his body?

I like this! ... Ask the coach to demonstrate it to the players.

I think it's fine to teach girls the right way to turn their bodies so that they are protected and don't always need to jump out of the way, and this might lead to more HBP, but I don't like the idea of having a strategy to entice the HBP. In the spirit of the rules, an HBP should be a mistake by the pitcher, not a good play by the batter.

I started to get a little concerned that no one got my first post!
I have gotten onto my youngest dd twice now about taking a pitch. She has been hit 14 times since fall ball started. She moved from lead off to 3 hole and has not made the mental switch yet.
