I had my catcher go out to the mound and sing show tunes to the pitcher when she started losing it. I would just yell to the catcher "Annie!" Pitched great after that. Got the idea from watching baseball movies (Bull Durham, Summer Catch) and hearing catchers on the mound say completely ridiculous things. It worked in this case.

I've been known to tell her coach, "have her try her other hand if she is not going to Blah, blah, blah...(whatever needs the most attention)...". Seems to settle all parties down.

I usually try to do the humor approach.

Stop picking your nose

Justin Beiber is looking at you

Watch the riseball (if ball is to high)

Watch the drop ball ( if ball is on the dirt)

your dad is taking you to Disneyland after this game.

Then dad will reply back, coach is going to give you a 100 dollar bill.

I call time and tell her that we don't need perfect, we just need close. Usually when a pitcher struggles, they are trying to be perfect and they aim their pitch. Tell her to trust her defense. Then have her breathe slowly while visualizing the pitch before the windup. This is something that should be PRACTICED!

When I notice my DD is over-focusing and tensing up, I'll yell out the title of the latest song we've both been listening to lately. She'll look at me, nod, and then set up for her next pitch, all while singing/whispering the song to herself. It was something she started doing to tune out the incessant chattering/cheering from the dugouts and stands, and it works for her.

But, as other have mentioned, each girl is different. You have to find what works for each one and then continue to refine it/mix it up so that it doesn't get "old."

You can also have the pitcher, call time and go ask the plate ump. Where the strike zone is because one of us doesn't know where it is. By the way when my mom played and pitched. She asked the ump that question. Let's just say she got to watch from the bench where the strike zone was. Some umps don't have a sense of humor.
I love this ... I did this as a coach one time when my pitcher was hitting the corners and the ump was not interested in calling strikes. Walked out to the pitching circle, talked to the pitcher a moment and turned to the ump and said " My pitcher was just curious where your strike zone is because she keeps throwing them where she thinks it is and you keep calling them balls" It was one of the only times I saw an ump speechless, if for just a moment. :D

If we're on the road, I ask her if she's tired. If she says yes, I tell her then hurry up, trust your stuff and finish it up so the team can go get ice cream and get into the hotel pool.
