Our approach

We have a short zone established in front of the plate, an area where we have practiced our catcher coming out hard and gunning. In a close game late we'll ask our catcher, who's an incredible player, to make that play at third if the bunt drops in that zone. Otherwise, we take the out at first. With the runner at third we will often pump fake hard to see if we can eliminate the scoring threat, or at least plant some doubt in the runner's and 3rd base coach's minds. Bad jump there could get us two for the price of one.

Work the ball on the 1st base side with 1b crashed, ball has to be pitched to that side. 3b stays home and the plan is to have them either pop it up or bunt it to 1b so the fielder can crash forward, apply the tag, then throw to third. If the runner does anything other then stop or go forward she is out.

Practice first receiving the throw at one and no step quick release firing home about a foot in front of home plate. Catcerh sets up and (right or wrong) blocks the plate in anticipation of the throw.

Worked many times for us and the fact that it MAY work shut down alot of teams even trying it.

Yes practice the catch at first and firing home (a lot!). We teach our catchers to stand right in front of home plate and then fall into the base path when they get the ball.

If you are playing for the out. 3rd and 1st cover bunt, 2nd covers 1st, SS cover 2nd, pitcher goes to 3rd. As soon as 2nd makes the play, fire to 3rd. Looking for a runner that rounded the base.
