So there is a thread going about how a coach ran his players on a hot day after they lost and played poorly. If a team at any level is playing poorly or not "giving it there all" should there be consequences?

What are your suggestions

Well , from what I can tell , it just isn't right to have consequences any more. If a kid or team plays poorly or shows no effort , it totally falls on the coach. Players should just get some ice cream

I have only coached younger Teams, my therory has always been if we lose it is the coaches fault, if we win it is the players success.

After a lose, the coaches had some pentally. After a win the players had some pentally.

It seemed to work out OK.

LOL. ...

Cyclone - Just because someone doesn't stand on the same point on the spectrum as you doesn't mean that he is on the extreme end of the spectrum. :) Although I do believe players should get ice cream sometimes. Coaches too.

There IS a consequence for playing poorly and showing no effort -- You lose. You drop in the batting order. You lose your favored position in the field. You sit the bench. Those are natural consequences. I believe that natural consequences (which include rewards for playing well and showing great effort) are better than artificial consequences, like punishment. That's all I'm saying.

Good discussion, and it's debates like these that help me learn. As previously stated, I'm trying to be open-minded.

So Cal
IMO, it depends on the reason and the age group. With 8U rec ball, let's go get some pizza and try better next time (with maybe some adjustments to positions and batting order). Keeping the game fun, and the kids wanting to play is a much bigger priority than just winning.

All those things happen on our team and the players and parents know it. But sometimes (like my situation in the other thread) , we as coaches had to do something that was out of the norm for us in order to get their attention and get a spark.

These kids want to do well and make the coaches happy. Showing you displeasure is more than enough to get them going. If it's not
you should have pulled them from the game. Sitting in the stands when it's 105 out is hard enough. If you want to "punish" a little at practice go ahead, but after 3 games to make them run sprints is just idiotic.

Not sure if you are referring to my specific scenario or not, But , it wasn't 105 degrees and we hadn't played 3 games.

So is it really the coaches fault if the players do not perform??

One game fine chew them out some. Maybe second game (if needed) run them. By the third game if the motivation isnt there, do you reevaluate your roster??

Of course it is. There is never any responsibility of the player (sarcastic). I recently had a player quit my team. She had basically missed the past two years with injuries and hadn't been hitting well. Thus , her spot in the batting order and playing time was affected. Her dad said he was too busy to work with her and I hadn't done enough to get her back up to speed. We have an optional batting practice every week in addition to our two team practices for those that feel they need extra work. I was there every week. This particular player never attended one of those sessions. Is it really my fault she didn't perform?
