I slice up old inner-tubes or roofing rubber and roll them up into sno-cone shaped holders. "Glue with contact cement. Set them in the hole on the T and away you go. If you hit them and not the ball, they just go flying without getting tore up. Depending on how you roll them up, you can vary the height somewhat. Last forever. Stick one in a milk jug if you want to work low. :)

It's a solid, very hard and rigid plastic bar. Trying to think of something similar for comparison -- it feels as solid and dense as a drumstick, but out of a different material.
