Bunt situation, what do you do?

As long as the coach is not telling them to hit the runner even if they are outside the lane then all is OK.

If they are being taught to drill the runner and not try and make the play then yeah I got a big problem with that as we all would. Your quote says "drill them if they are anywhere near the line"...that should not be acceptable they are either inside or outside the line, the only thing you should be teaching is to keep your throw to the inside of the line where the runner is should not be relevant.

edit: to goingdeeps point was this something that was said one time at one game because the other team was constantly abusing the situation by always running inside the line and your catcher was afraid to throw the ball...that would make more sense but as a blanket policy see above comments

Of course it is reprehensible for a coach to teach the catcher to throw at 10U girls. It is also just plain stupid.

yes I understand that if the runner gets hit with the ball she is out.

No, it is *not* an automatic out. Read the rules. Here is the NCAA Rule:

Rule 12.2.4.2 The batter runner may not run outside the base runners lane and, in the umpire's judgment, interfere with the fielder taking the throw at first base.

It is a judgment call by the umpire. What the coach is really doing is teaching his players to forego controlling the outcome of the play and let some other person (in this case the umpire) control the situation.

And, if the umpire doesn't call the girl out, the coach will no doubt loudly lament the stupidity of the umpire. Assuming no one is hurt, the people who have been around the game will sit around and have a good laugh.

What I am trying to make myself understand is why, as coaches who are responsible for the safety of these children we are still teaching this dirty form of playing ball.

Oh, that is easy...some coach is trying to impress everyone with his incomplete knowledge of softball.

That's a good questions, with no one on and no one out if the runner is just a couple feet down the line the catcher has plenty of time to either clear the runner or wait until runner crosses to the outside of the line. The line is draw half way up the line three feet outside and parallel but I think it is just there as a tool for the ump and not determinative.

However if there are runners on base the catcher should not have to wait or side step for any reason since it is the runner who is at fault. I think the direct line rule might come into play here, think about it if the ball is fair and the fielders glove is fair the direct line is in fair territory so if the runner is in between that direct line they would be in the wrong, although I'll defer to people who know more than me on this one.

There are some really good questions that might be raised on rules forum to get some perspective from the umpires. Not sure if any of the respondants thus far are umps?

How many feet down the line does the runner have, before she has to move into foul territory?

30’ line drawn in foul territory parallel to and 3’ from the first base foul line. It starts halfway from home plate and goes to the back edge of first base.

You know what... after talking to my 13yo and thinking about it a little bit, I have a question.

Was it an AC you had the disagreement with? If it were her catching coach teaching her these things, would you call and flip out on them?

Maybe you should have just stating the "team philosophy" about these sort of things. For example, "I just want to let you know, as a team, we do not encourage our players to ever intentionally hurt another."

No, actually it was my HC, I am the AC of this particular team. I am the HC of another team in the same organization. You are 100% right, I definetely handled it the wrong way and should have allowed myself some time to cool down before I went off half cocked. By the way, I didn't do ANY of this "flipping out" in front of players or parents, just to clear the air on that in case it comes up.
