Just curious if anyone has had the talk with there DD's about this topic. I was thinking about educating my daughter on the topic. I just feel a bit uncomfortable because she is only 9. I believe its still a good idea to let her know what can happen.

Has anyone's dd ever been approached by her piers to use steroids??

I've honestly never heard of steroids in our sport. It's not to say it doesn't happen but it would be so rare as to not be a worry.

I don't see any need to have a discussion on steroids with a nine year old. Recreational drugs on the other hand would be the better option. She's more likely to be offered that.

Not a conversation I would have with my 10 YOA, DD talks to DW if something ‘unusual’ happens.

Maybe when she is a little bit older and stops communicating with us it might be a conversation worth having.

In the alternative universe of softball, girls have neither a libido nor a desire to excel. Everyone just wants to play the game and enjoy the sunshine. No one cares about winning or losing and those silly plaques they hand out after the season.

Come on, wake up...this is America. If there is money and fame involved, some people will do anything.

In the USA, a softball scholarship could be worth up to $150K. Softball players good enough to play in college are highly competitive, driven people. Prior to college, some girls do use performance enhancing drugs.

But, of course, in college, there are routine drug testings that inhibits the use of drugs...and athletic trainers, on the other hand, know which drugs are allowable.

Everyone wants to talk about steroids. But, there are a lot of other performance enhancing drugs out there....specifically, amphetamines.

Part of drug education for your DD should include a discussion of drug use given by "friendly" people...like doctors, trainers, and friends.

I agree with you slugger, there is so much riding on these kids to preform to get that scholarship,or the next level. It most certainly becomes a option for some girls to look at.Lets be honest, look at the whole bat explosion, what bat is hot, rolling of bats, shaving of bats."We",me included are always looking for the next hot bat.It becomes not such a far step, for some of these girls to start looking for ways to excel their bodys, with out some of the hard work that goes into it.Back to the question,I feel IMO it is never to early to talk to your kids about any drugs. If you aren't talking to them about drugs, there soon will be,and they always don't have the best info to give.

What can happen? At age 9, the conversation involves telling a child not to believe everything (read: anything) they hear in the media without seeking outside verification on their own.

We've got a society being led by a media that's largely steroid stupid, for lack of a better term. I won't go into all the politics behind one of today's witch hunts, but we tell young people "don't do drugs", yet allow them to be inundated with ads telling them how much they need to be taking some 'government approved' pharm compound. Because of the of the billions brought in my 'government approved' drug sales, hundreds of millions of dollars are spent on advertising to create a drug-happy culture, and let's not forget the millions spent on professional lobbyists.

With respect to teenagers using PEDs, there aren't many surveys available, but what you'll find is that a majority of girls who are using are doing so for the fat-burning advantages that certain AAS can provide. Relatively few female HS athletes are using in order to improve athletic performance vs the number of girls who are using for reasons of vanity.

My DD is far more knowledgeable about PEDs than 99% of the people talking about them in the media, but she also knows there are no shortcuts to anything worth achieving and that there is absolutely no substitute for hard work.

In FL, they drug in HS. In college, my DD's team had a test in the fall.

I'd have the talk, but it's a little early at age 9.
