I'm helping coach a 11/12U Little League team. Last night was first time I made the girls run from third to foul pole in left field. One for not hustling to bases on a past ball, two playing flat with no energy, and three was most important was to get the blood flowing cause it got chilly last night at about 59 degrees. Brrrrr. So wanted to get the the girls moving a bit. Parent fired off at me about "why did I make the girls run?" I shrug her off told her, "not to worry about it to go back in the bleachers." Then she said "well F*&$k you then!" Shocked at her statement, I just laughed and ignored her. Then she got another parent wild up and they both started attacking the blue. To which neither one of them knew how to title him. The second parent was like, " yea the guy with the face thing on him, doesn't know anything!" Then a few of the player yelled out, "he's called the Umpire!" To which the mom being ghetto says, " yea that Emperor doesn't know anything and he's a cheater too!" So yea facepalm and SMH . LMAO!!

That's certainly a new one. A parent saying that to the coach... I don't know what I'd do. Probably a mix of finding out if I can boot a parent to handing her the clip board and telling all the girls she's the new coach while enjoying the dear in the headlights response.

Parents baffle me. I was doing batting practice with a 10u player helping out a rec ball team that was in shambles from HC not showing up and then finally quitting mid season as well as no assistant coaches. We were way down the first base line in the outfield while the rest of the team was working on ground ball drills with the new HC. Very first practice I had a parent came charging across the field from the 3rd base side hustling up behind me and started laying into me about not changing her swing right in front of his daughter. No introduction, no "hey coach can we talk real quick", just aggressive right away. I think I diffused it ok because I wasn't trying to change anything with her swing, I was asking her about her swing and how she was taught. I wish I was better at how to handle confrontations, but that just isn't my thing. Afterwords I replayed it in my head and I really wanted to stand up to him and tell him to get off the field, but that probably wouldn't have ended well. I just let the HC know it happened so we can keep an eye out for him in the future.

I made a phone call last Friday to the head guy at our City recreation department, he's a great guy that I've known for over 30 years. I told him my situation with Anna being a senior and she'll be leaving for college next August, I told him I wanted to coach a little 12U rec fastpitch team. His first response was "REALLY......well dude, you just went straight to the top of the list!!

WARRIORMIKE......you're making me doubt my decision!

Again there for the kids and love the sport. Also had some great plays from girls that have never seen a softball in their life. The team we played last night always dominated us. We had a great fight last night and it wasn't a one sided game. It was still great to be out on the field .

So Cal
The most difficult thing about coaching youth sports is the parents. Always.

"Emperor"....LMAO. Good luck, Mike.

Yeah, it would be 100% for the kids and the love of the game! I understand all too well what Eric means about the parents......all too well! I specifically told the rec director I wanted 12U team, don't know why other than the 12U years were just fun for me! Girls are starting to get a little bigger / stronger and they're getting a grasp on the meaning of team ball. I told my wife I definitely wanted to do rec and not travel even though I haven't been around rec ball for around 6 or 7 years.

My goal would be to get them ready for school ball and have a personal goal of having every girl I coach make their school team cut!

The best part of getting out of the park and into travel was getting away from parents like this. Back in 6U the girls moving up to 8U had to stop using a tee and hit coach pitch at the halfway point of the season. I had a mom screaming at me that I wanted her daughter to fail. Got worse when I would not let her on the infield. I was clear with the parents that I wanted everyone to play everywhere and I wanted it to be fun. My only rule was to play infield they had to pay attention and at least be able to defend themselves or get out of the way. I had two or three I didn't feel safe having up there and the same girl was one of them. Toward the end of the season her mom was complaining about it a a practice so I against my better judgment I put her at 2nd so at least she was as far away as possible. First pitch after that DD hit a line drive right into her chest and she never saw it because she wasn't paying attention. Thank the Lord we used RIF balls but it was her last day of softball.

I really like the idea of a letter to the parents from the HC at the start of the season laying out the ground rules for parents interfacing with the team and coach. There have been some really good examples posted here. I wish our coaches or even the league would spell out the rules for parents at the beginning of the season. Sometimes I think the rule book for parents should be longer than the softball rule book!
