I saw a posting for a private tryout. What in real terms do you think that means?

We put that in our postings in case someone can’t make it to normal tryouts.

A tryout at a different time as the open tryout. Or maybe the same thing as a HC saying
" we are looking to fill 12 Positions" when all 3 coaches have kids on the team. just sayin'.

I took it as, no one has showed up to our public tryouts so now we are going to shroud ourselves in mystery to make it seem we are exclusive.

Some people may not want to be seen at a big tryout. So they can have a private tryout and decide if they want to leave their current team. There are a few other reasons but that is one of the biggest I would guess.

I've always simply saw it as giving a person a chance to tryout outside of the regular tryout dates. Example: my DD was supposed to attend a tryout yesterday. However, Friday God decided to remind us how he flooded the earth. Therefore, Saturday was called off. The coach sent me an email stating he rescheduled for next Sat. I said she can't as she's filling in that weekend. He then offered her a private tryout on another day.

Then, as others have mentioned, if you're on a team but you don't want your coach to know your kid is trying out for another team, you do a private tryout.

Personally, my DD did a private tryout last week and it was great. In and out in 30 mins.

We've had two really great team tryouts (whoo hoo) but we still have offered private. We had one where the girl was out of town for our team tryout. We had one where they weren't sure what was going to happen with their current team, and wanted to keep things on the DL rather than show up in a big group. Plus around here 800 teams all have tryouts on the same days. If players want to try out for more than a couple of teams they kind of have to set up something private. With school ball going on and last year's TB series just ended, we aren't having regular team practices yet where they could just come out. So no, I don't think it necessarily means anything nefarious.

When I was still involved with tryouts we typically held two regular tryout dates plus privates. As others have stated the privates were simply to offer another opportunity if someone was unable to make the other dates. In most cases it was because they were at other tryouts. We typically received calls from 3 to 5 people per year for privates. We worked out a time and date that was mutually acceptable.

Private tryouts are the best! Snap up the opportunity. I think that just about every time DD has had a private, we've gotten an offer because they can give you 100% attention and she'll get the opportunity to bat a lot more than just the 8-10 swings of the bat she'll get at a big tryout. More reps generally equals better performance.
