I saw a posting for a private tryout. What in real terms do you think that means?

A lot of coaches, especially in high level A-ball will offer private tryouts because they are only looking for one or two player and most players do not want their current coach or teammates to know they are trying out for another team. The softball community is pretty small, and word gets around about who shows up at who's open tryouts.

We pretty much only do private tryouts or small group tryouts. We start doing private tryouts early which are confidential because some parents don't want it known that they are looking around and potentially leaving their current team. I like it because you are not wasting time working girls out that you are not going to take and the girls you are interested in get a lot of work. The girls and the parents we have in for tryouts seem much more relaxed and seem to ask more questions. I think it is also cool to have some of the girls that are already on the team and their families so that they/we can get to know the parents to make sure all are the right fit and us for them.

My DD2 just did a private tryout with a potential new team. Her current coach let it be known no one on team was guaranteed a spot for next year, so who it might get back to was not a concern (I am assuming a coach who says that realizes players then have to tryout for other teams). I sent an email to someone about trying out with their org, didn't hear anything for about three weeks, then got email back saying that org had merged (or at least part of it had) with another, and the were looking for a player at DD2s primary position in her age group (I think new org was doing an additional team in this age group with the girls who came in from defunct org, but not all went), and he offered a private tryout (I think their tryouts were passed when he got back to me). Pros and Cons. It was extremely hot and humid, and DD2 is still learning about hydrating in advance, and with being the only one there (two coaches and her), lot of reps, she was hot and got out of breath a few times, but they did give her a few breaks. all in all about 40 minutes, so that was nice. I thought it clearly showed her abilities, and also what she needs to work on (mainly power in throwing and hitting).

In this area, I think it is mainly to give a shot to someone who cannot get to posted tryouts due to scheduling conflicts (other tryouts, vacations, etc.).
