Since we're all parents, not just softball parents, I need to vent.

DD is 16 and will need a car for work, practice, school, etc in a few weeks. So I call a used car dealership regarding a potential vehicle. He asks which one, and then his first comment is, "yeah, we still have it but somebody JUST took it for a test drive this morning."

Really? Is that a fact? We have to start with the BS right from GO? Thanks bud for reminding me why I hold on to cars until the wheels fall off or the engine falls out.

Response:

"Cool. Since you already have a buyer for the car, I'll just stop wasting your time and move on to a dealership ready to make a deal today. Thank you for your time."

I purchased new the cars that my kids will eventually get. I know their maintenance history and mechanical condition, and know they are roadworthy.

I turned one over a few months ago to my oldest saying, "be responsible, and it's yours...wreck it, and you're buying your own". She's doing very well with it so far.

Not here.
My wife, DS & DD, drive newer and better cars than me and I'm the one with the job.

When C got her first car it had been one of our cars for years. Unfortunately she totaled that one in a very minor accident. Tow hitch to the radiator just hard enough for the airbags to go off. We were lucky to get enough from insurance to buy her a new one, few years older than the first but in really good shape. Her friends all picked on her for driving a Prius until gas prices went up and saw that she could drive Boston to CT and back on less than a tank of gas. Now they all want hybrids.
Car shopping sucks but we pretty much looked online then went knowing what cars they had in our price range. She test drove 4, we ruled out one and let her pick which one she felt more comfortable in.

I went to our local Toyota dealership here drove a couple ( no pressure) and then got a call the next day from the VP of Sales. I was driving so I just said I would swing by. He sat down with the cost price sheet and list price for every truck on their lot. I told him I was looking at the Titan. He said he had registered to put it in an auction, but if that's the one I wanted he would give it to me for $2,000 below cost cause he never knew what they would get at the auction. So I got it for cheap with no pressure. Helped that I bought a new Camery two months earlier. But I got that one for $4 over cost. Some times they just need to turn them.

Except, I fully believe you were still lied to. ;)

The last few cars we've bought have been off Craigslist. We've had great luck and we buy old cars. The most recent acquisition was a 2001 Lincoln Navigator we got for $3800 in near perfect condition, to tow our camper. Our primary cars are both Toyotas. Get oil changes and they last forever. Both older with maintenance records. It takes a little more work but IMO is much better than dealing with used car salesmen. We take any car we're considering in to Tires Plus. For $15 they'll go over it and give you a print out of everything they find that needs fixing.
