Due to all the rain this past week and weekend, our tournament was canceled. Spent a good part of the weekend watching NCAA regional games.

Why are college players allowed to wear jewelry? I was surprised at how many girls it on— including nose piercings, earrings, etc. Thanks!

Around here DD has to take out earrings for HS ball but not club ball. She hates taking all of her earrings out for every game.

My understanding it is up to the umpires judgement.

Nothing to do with SB but not a big fan, they can do what that want as long as the do not endanger other players.

NCAA has it's own rule set and has allowed jewelry for quite some time - I believe going back to 2004. It changed to 'coaches determine player attire' so unless coach decides something, they are free to wear whatever they like.

Every orgs rule set has it's own jewelry rule and they are all different. I umpire for several different orgs and have a cheat sheet for the most common rules I refer to at the beginning of each day.

It can be a real pain keeping them all straight especially during HS/College season where you can go NCAA/NFHS and then USSSA/ASA on the weekend and so on. Several local umps do baseball as well just to make it even harder on them.

NCAA: Anything goes and it is on the coach
NHFS: No jewelry allowed
USSSA: Jewelry allowed as long as the umpire doesn't deem it dangerous.(11.2.E) - this is a recent change
ASA: Jewelry allowed as long as the umpire doesn't deem it dangerous. Religious or medical bracelets need to be be taped down(3.6.F)

Am I the only person who thinks people with 3+ ear piercings looks like they are trying to be a pirate? And don't get me started on the tattoos...

I've always had the opposite question, why are girls not allowed to wear them at lower levels? Makes very little sense to me as long as we're not talking hoop earrings or something else that would be a safety issue.

I've always found it odd that the umps make our girls take off even small plastic bracelets where I can't even see them causing a problem. Even hairbands around their wrists have to come off. But meanwhile in MLB I watch them play with their huge necklaces on that are flying all over the place.

At younger ages its a safety and liability thing. Post earrings can and have been pushed into that soft spot behind the jaw, pinning the ear down. They have also been hit at an angle tearing a hole in the kids ear. Kids slide late and get tangled up with the fielder. Someones bracelet or necklace is going to hook onto someone else's finger... At an older age, the skills are better and the players can accept responsibility for their own injuries.

Just behind home plate
At the high school level, our coaches don't allow us to wear earrings or other forms of body piercing jewelry. At the travel ball level, we're allowed to wear earrings and other body jewelry. We are allowed on both levels to wear necklaces, bracelets, anklets and that kind of stuff. I mostly wear my softball necklace when I'm playing but I take my jewelry out of all 8 of my ear piercings but I'm thinking about maybe getting my nose pierced this fall.
