IME lower level coaches underestimate what the kids are capable of learning and tend to dumb things down more than they have to. Push them and let them rise to the occasion. They'll have more fun that way too. JMO.

I 100% agree with this, watch 10U and 12U and mimic drills. I would say latch on to some folks and take in as much as possible. I was lucky to coach travel BB first and learn from tons of great folks. By the time DD's were born and played I had a partial clue. Also ask questions at lessons and observe don't just sit in the lobby. Number #1 is progress is made between practices so have fun and play catch in the yard. It flys by too quickly.

ABSOLUTELY!!! One of the best things that happened with my DD when she moved to TB was being with coaches who had experience at higher levels (18U Gold), and taught the same skills at 10U and 12U. Younger players will take longer to learn stuff, but they will learn.

This is fom our “mission Statement” for our U8/U9 league (Warning: this is LL which equates to Rec. League) Its still being developed but this part is pretty much done. These kids are really young. I forgot how young until i started working with them. 2 out of 3 of the coaches seem to think that getting them to pitch and catch is pushing these kids way too hard. Shoot me now. So the following will be the minimum standards implemented next year:

Fundamentals to learn here: be able to swing a bat and hit a pitched ball. Throw overhand and catch a ball. Basic understanding of how to play the game, run the bases, outs and scoring runs (even though we wont keep score.) players get to try every position, kids who are interested in pitching will begin pitching.

Softball and baseball are two very complicated and difficult games. At this level, the biggest obstacles for players are boredom, confusion and failure, so provide a positive learning environment and always be on the lookout to nip those obstacles in the bud. While simplified in its execution, this league is key to player development and as such becomes the foundation of each subsequent league as they move up.
