Hi! In the mail today, DD (2021) received a letter from a D1 school inviting her to 2 camps/clinics- one they are attending, the other they will be hosting.

My first reaction is to be excited, immediately followed by is this BS??? That was my feeling when I received the invite for the Under Armour tryout. I googled the school and the person who wrote the letter is an Asst Coach. Are these letters just mass mailings or is there a tiny bit of genuine interest here?

Thanks!

Mass mailings most likely. I have a pile of them and an Inbox full of them. Usually a personal invite comes through your TB coach. IF that coach really wants to see your DD at the camp you will know. Always keep in mind that camps/clinics are fundraisers. I am sure the coaches want to see her there along with your check. Has your DD been sending emails? Did she fill out the school's Recruiting Questionnaire? That is how you get on their camp invite list typically. You should consider going only if this school or if they other schools are on your DD's list of schools.

I am still learning about the new rule changes to recruiting. Are coaches still going to be "personally" invite pre-juniors to camps or will it be more of an informal letter of notification of camps?

It will be a 'wink wink' coded conversation thing now. They can't technically invite you, but they will say something like "We would love to see X, Y and Z at our camp. I think they would get a lot out of it" in 'passing' conversation. And they will still be able to separate the 'players they are interested in and the 'money makers' when they attend camp. It just may not be as clear which group you are in until you turn up now.

And after camps there will be lots of 'We can really see X here' type conversations where players and parents will walk away with a really confused idea of where they stand.

Lots of fun...
