Reading discuss Fastpitch about HS ball is like reading a horror novel. So worried about next year!

I will say that DD's season has been positive. The team is 5-0 and she took a break today and the recently promoted JV pitcher did a nice job against a weaker opponent. Do I have issues :) Yes.. .but nothing too bad. Everyone's experience is different. But as many on here told me "enjoy the ride" and don't get caught up in the things that take away from the experience. Travel starts soon :)

Bullying is going on. From the coach by singling out a player for some unknown reason. I spoke with the AD today who agreed certain situations should not have been handled the way they were by the HC. Unfortunately, after being called out in the bus today and more little unnecessary digs in the dugout DD came home and said she is turning in her uniform tommorrow. At the game today, she was actually pulled aside by a coach that is also quitting, who told her that she would completely understand if she (DD) quit the team. The coach also told her that the team needs her more than she (DD) needs the team. DD is turning in her uniform to the AD tomorrow and explaining why.

So, did she quit the team? I hope she didn't.

Mopar, I hope your daughter sticks it out. It is too bad that a coach can completely ruin someone's season.

I had this exact conversation with my DD last night. She is not really even suppose to be a catcher and has not done so much since she was young, so of course she has struggled with blocking balls. Our number one pitcher is fast, but struggles with control and has a lot of balls in the dirt. (and usually 4-5 10 feet up the backstop each game) Coach apparently has been making comments all the time to DD in the dugout between innings about how "she should be getting better by now" and last year's catcher's name..."would have blocked that ball" or "would have thrown her out." I was unaware that this has been going on till last night. I told her that she only has about a month more to put up with him, and again, just do the best you can. Unfortunately some coaches are just negative coaches. Both, our head coach, and his assistant stand there during games and do not say a word, unless it is something negative, or to criticize something one of the girls did wrong. Unfortunately it hasn't changed in four years.:(

So DD 1 has quit the team. She went yesterday and turned in her uniform to the AD. While meeting with him and the Assistant Principal, she told them both the reasons why. The Assistant Principle said there was a bunch of things that have been said and done that should not have happened and looked at the AD and said this will be taken care of. He was simply amazed as my DD put it, that all this occurred. She also told them about numerous others that are talking about quitting, the coach that told me DD she will not return next season because of the treatment of the girls, and the other coach that was making sexist comments to all the girls. My DD drilled him in the chest and stomach a few times because they do not use a screen when feeding the pitching machine in the cage. He told her it didn’t her cause a girl hit it and it would have hurt more if a boy did. Also said multiple times that girls can’t bend their knees, throw far or hard.

When she left yesterday, the team was in the team room getting ready for a game. No coaches. She walked in, got her bag, hugged a few players she is friends with and then told them all good luck in the game, see you in school. The girls asked where she was going and she said she just handed in her uniform and quit the team. She said basically everyone just looked shocked.

We have a new AD starting next week. I kind of hope that this may start a bunch of girls leaving that are thinking about it. I have yet to hear if anything has happened or will happen to the coach, but with the track record of the school, I doubt it. We shall see.

I do hope the coach is replaced for next year though. DD1 will be a senior and DD2 will be a freshman. I was hoping to see them play as the battery. Although next year, they will be playing on the same travel team and I will be the Assistant Coach, so it will be fun no matter what. The president of our organization asked me to Assistant coach and put both on the same team because the team needs a pitcher, catcher and assistant coach so it worked out perfect.

Although I'm sure there are some out there with good experiences, I don't know a single parent or player who is happy with HS ball. This includes those who make the starting lineup. Unlike travel ball, where you choose the team and the team chooses you, HS ball puts a bunch of competing interests together and rarely does anything to reconcile, control, or even monitor those differences. I see players who are cornerstones of good competitive teams who ride the bench. I see players get asked to work on a specific position with their travel team with the promise of starting, do so, and then ride the bench when the DD of some favored parent shows up. I see players who are widely known to be excellent at one position being forced into doing something completely different, with all the pressure of playing with and for comparative strangers that situation often brings. Then there's the politics, the favorites, and the scapegoats. I wonder why so many put up with it when competitive ball is so widely available.

Nothing personal but I'm not buying this. I've coached TB and I like coaching HS ball just fine. I don't think the statement is either fair, accurate or helpful. again, nothing personal.
