How did you handle time conflicts between HS softball and travel? The exciting news is that DD (HS freshman) survived cuts and will be playing with Varsity. The bad news is that our travel team is a 2nd yr 14u team with games and tournaments on Saturdays. She doesn’t want to disappoint either team but unfortunately there are inevitable conflicts. We know that with Varsity, she is a developing player and not a starter, but dd believes in putting in her time with the hopes if eventually earning a starter spot down the line. On her travel team, she is a starter in the infield.

My DDs played on several different 14U teams in several states and they all understood that those playing HS ball had to wait until the season is over to play TB. In many states it is a rule that a player can't play TB during the HS season.

That's the way it is (or at least was) in Illinois. Once the HS season has officially started, no other softball. That includes something like co-ed slow pitch as well. Plus at least at our HS, you would only have an occasional Saturday off (Prom) and every Sunday. You either have a game, practice or rain out. There isn't time for travel ball.

Agree with 55dad^^^

DD played on a team last year with several HS players. Softball is a fall HS sport here. The HS girls were not allowed to play with the TB team until after HS season was over (once their team was out of playoffs/State).

I think you can get an exception from school in IL and do what you want.

MN allows girls to play TB during the HS season, but most teams shut it down until the season is over. Couple years ago a girl left in the middle of the HS championship game for a TB tourney and that generated some talk of banning it. I haven’t heard anything about it since then. Tough spot for the kid. Rain caused the game to be rescheduled and I guess that conflicted with flights. Couldn’t have been an easy decision either way.

I honestly don’t know what the rule is in my state. Last yr, when we were 1st yr 14u - we had 1 girl that was in HS, but the tourneys never seemed to conflict w her HS games.

I was always under the impression, that freshmen could play travel and school- 14u. It is not until you hit 16/18u when you shut down, but stinks when your kid is Varsity and 14u!

If you were the coach of the HS team would you allow players to just dance in and out of the team because of conflicts with playing on another team? Here it is against the rules to play the same sport on another team during the same season as school ball and softball for 16's and 18's just shuts down for the duration. Unless both coaches are will to let her miss practices and games from both she is going to have to pick one over the other and commit to it through the season.
