That is such a shame, but with the information available, I think she made the best decision for her. If she wore out her arm last year as JV, I am sure they would do it again this year. Honestly, sounds like they needed a pitcher on JV so they put her there. Not the best decision for your DD, but the best decision for the HC. I hope she enjoys her time off and can kill it in TB this year!
Side note on fundraising: our booster club sent out an email to all of us about selling something for the team fundraising. The trouble is my DD is an eighth grader and try outs aren't until May! But you can't tell coach you aren't fundraising because you haven't even made a high school team yet. Then you are not contributing if you do make the team. So we are selling flowers and hanging baskets if anyone wants any

This just happens in HS. Maybe I missed it but I did not hear you say your DD was better than the starting Varsity pitcher.

Had this same thing happen to a pitcher a few years ago she was the starting pitcher on a good 16U A TB team, but she was never going to see the varsity mound the starting pitcher was two years ahead of her and a D1 commit, All Conference, etc..

She led the JV team for two years and when it was "her turn" a super stud who was actually better than her came in as a freshman and she just decided she did not want to be on JV another year so she quit.

Also if your DD was the starting Varsity pitcher she would be pitching every inning and wearing her arm out but I'm assuming wearing your arm out on Varsity is OK?

In the end there are tons of variables and no two situations are alike your DD and you just come together and make the best decision possible and move on.

Well, my DD 3 just quit her HS team, right after tryouts. DW and I strongly encouraged her to do so.

Here is the back story:

DD 3 is a sophomore. There are 3 really good and 6 good sophomores.
Of the 3 really good sophomores, one made varsity as a freshman, one as a sophomore, and DD 3 was still on JV,
Of the 6 good sophomores, two made varsity as a freshman, two as a sophomores, one is still stuck on JV, and one quit during her freshman year because she was stuck on JV 2.
Also, two not-so-good sophomores made varsity.

Today was the day to either pay the fees, or quit the team.

DD 3 had a talk with the varsity HC today. No luck. I remember last year one of the JV girls kept making errors at a certain position in the spring, then DD 3 played that same position half the time in the summer. DD 3 was clearly better. But, the HC told DD 3 that this other girl was better at that position. Actually, I can think of 9 positions DD 3 can play better than that girl, and she wasn't even the worst player put on varsity.

DD 3 played fall ball with varsity last fall, and was one of the best hitters. DD 3 was one of the best hitters, one of the best fielders, one of the best pitchers and the second best base-runner. So the coach put her on JV.

It gets worse. This year some parents decided to fund raise to send varsity to Florida for spring break. That meant DD 3 spent quite a bit of time fund raising for a trip she thought she would get, but now she won't.

So, why not spend another year on JV and suck it up? Trouble is, DD 3 is a much better pitcher than anyone on JV. MUCH better. Last year DD 3 spent 2 innings at 1B, and every other inning she played she pitched. Wore out her arm before TB season started. This year DD 3 wants to save her arm.

So, bye bye to HS ball.

Going into this, did the coach have a little some against you, DD3's dad?

Remember back in the good ol days where the best players started...period. I hate politics

Meh, since the beginning of time politics have played a role in school sports. Some get lucky, some in between, and some not at all.

To the OP, she's gotta do what's best for her. TB seems to be way more important than HS when it comes to softball, so more time for her to workout and focus on being a bada** in TB. :)
