I realize that there are good high school programs and bad high school programs all over the country. Same with travel ball. But one thing I know for sure, is that most of the girls that play for me seem to enjoy travel ball much more than high school ball, for various reasons. During the spring we have optional practices during the high school season. It is very common for the players to spend the time prior to practice complaining about their high school experiences. And as I talk to them throughout practice, I often hear a negative comment or two about their programs. As a group we have decided to look at high school ball as pre-season for the game they prefer to play (travel ball). Although optional, they typically come to travel ball practice as an escape and to spend time with their travel ball friends. Even the girls that are not permitted to practice with us (due to their high school rules) show up for practice and sit in the dugout, just to be with the team.

It's unfortunate. As a high school baseball and basketball player, I had a positive experience in both. I had really hoped that my DD would enjoy her experience as well. And to a certain extent, she has. But in a far different way than travel ball. I am sure that she does not regret her decision to play high school ball, but if she had been forced to choose between high school and travel, i have absolutely no doubt what her choice would have been.

How competitive are their HS teams? I had this experience my senior in HS. The 2 previous years our HS team was competitive and there wasn't much "looking forward" to Legion ball even though the Legion team many of us played for was good (better) than the HS team. Our senior year the team was average, I think maybe a .500 club and by halfway through the season most of us were counting the days till Legion started..

It varies. That's why I said various reasons :)
DD's team is not good. She is the only travel ball player and most of the teams we play against have travel ball players at every position. She plays because many of the players are her friends. She has known most since Kindergarten. Only 2 wins this season.
2 play for a school a few miles away and don't care for the coach. I think the coach means well but he is a teacher with no softball background. He didn't even play baseball growing up. This team made the playoffs this year but was eliminated in the first round. They have several good ballplayers with tons of travel ball experience.
3 others play for a team the makes districts nearly every year. They finished the regular season 14-6. But there is a lot of drama and fighting among the players. They are happy to get away from it.

There are a few schools in the area that have very good teams with coaches that I respect. But none of these players attend those schools. It's a mixed bag. Like I said, I know there are good programs out there.
