3-0 count sounds like the pitcher is struggling to me. If we need base runners in a close game, my batter better take. If give "green light " to a decent batter on a 3-0 count, she will chase/reach for a border line pitch. Nothing more selfish to me than chasing a pitch simply because you want swing the bat. That's a good way to make a bad pitcher look good. Its a team effort for a win and if you reach 1st on a walk who cares its about a disciplined batter. The mentality of "nobody walks of the island" doesn't really apply here in my opinion. Those kids don't have a chance in life unless they can catch the eye of a scout. Not too many girls playing at professional level earning checks like professional baseball players.

Thank you for your feedback- your thoughts are very similar to my husband's. In all honesty, his only concern is for our dd's performance, not the team's. DD is 14u, was always a natural hitter. Somewhere last season started to slump. She walked a lot but also had a high batting avg. To him, a walk is not a good thing. He'd rather see her strikeout swinging. He called her the walk queen. I believe that helped rattle the confidence in herself. New season and she is striking out swinging at bad pitches. You can tell that she is nervous. So when coach signals her to take a pitch, husband is convinced it is because there is no faith that she can hit. Frustrating situation all around. Want her to find her groove.

Just to be clear, I'm not saying it's not good to get a lot of walks. Unless you have a slew of HR hitters you need people on base. Good coaches notice which kids are on base all the time. Your husband is dead wrong that striking out swinging is better than walking. If you teach your daughter to chase bad pitches that's all she'll get at the next level. If I see a kid who will swing at balls I will never throw them a strike and let them get out on their own.

Definitely. A K does nothing to help the team. I'm a fan of big hitters who also have the discipline to take a BB if that's what is handed to them. Get on base!
