Tell me if I'm reading to much into this. DD is attending a tournament for the sake of trying out for a team. Two games in and she is 'slotted' last in the batting lineup. If you bring a kid in to look at them wouldn't you want them to get several plate appearances so that you can get a better idea if they can hit?

Nope...Last is where I'd bat her. Let's see if she has enough spunk to fight her way up the order.

If it's pool play then I would be batting her 6th or so, to see what she has. If it's bracket play then I most likely have her at the bottom of the lineup unless she shows something really special in pool play.

Not here.

2 games batting last in the line up will still give you 'several appearances' to 'get an idea if they can hit' or not. I don't even need an at bat. Let me see a hitter in pre game warm up.
So, how did DD do......

One tourney DD was just a warm body, none of the coaches knew her.

After pre game I think they would have batted her 10th or just take the out. When you only have 9 players you take your chances.

She worked her way to 2nd in order. :)

When teams DD's on has had guest players they usually have started out in the bottom slot. For some coaches it's gauging how good they are in a spot where they'll do less harm than higher up, I think. At least last year, our coach just wanted to give our girls the reps more than he wanted to give a guest player the reps, which I think is fair.

Slot in the batting order doesn't matter in this scenario. Over the course of a weekend tournament, she will get plenty of at bats to be evaluated and likely will get up in different situations...runners on, different out counts, bunt situation, etc. Besides, unless she's trying out for DP, batting is only part of the equation. Fielding, fit/chemistry, coachability, etc, are all equally important.

Shouldn't take more than an AB or 2 to see if a kid can hit..in particular if they are older (>12U). I would even agree with rdbass IF the pre-game warmup was something more than tee swings. I have seen a lot of kids (mine included) whose
tee swing is different than live ball (some better....some worse).

At the younger ages they might be more nervous at first for various reasons (new team, etc) which might be another reason to bat them lower in the
order initially..less "pressure".
