update, coach from first tryout called and left us message past weekend, and we called them back, and got a few clarifications (wanted to make certain DD2 would get practice time and opportunity for PT at C, $ discussion, spring and fall schedule discussion), DW and I liked what we heard, so we pulled the trigger. hopefully the right call.

now we have to let her old team know, that will be interesting. gonna keep it very clinical, nothing personal really, just not a good fit.

At every tryout DD has gone to, if they wanted her we knew before we left the field. If they didn't want her we never heard squat. Seems to be the norm in our area where there are dozens of teams and more than enough talent to go around. I wish we knew 4 years ago what we know now, which is to be entirely realistic about DD's abilities. We sure thought she was better she than what she was, but once we got a good dose of reality she has put in a ton of work and now might be able to make any team she tries out for. Now it's a matter of us doing the research ahead of time to find out if the team she's trying out for has an opening at her position.

If I had to offer advice to anyone about tryouts, it would be what I've mentioned - be realistic about abilities and do research on teams before attending the tryouts. You may also stay away from teams that say "all positions open" unless it's a brand new team. That's usually just a way for them to cover their own backside if they find a player who is better than what they already have and they want to "justify" making a cut. It's a sign of a weak coach who would rather cut a kid than work with her to make her better.

And the streak continues. DD went to a tryout last week and they made the offer before we left the field. It was the 8th team to try out for this season, and it was the best team of them all. We thought she had a chance at all the others, but 4 of them turned her down and all for different reasons. Didn't even think she had a chance at this one because the team is so good and she gets the offer. Never heard a peep out of the other 3, so they missed out. If any of them had made an offer earlier, we might have accepted and never gone to the tryout for the really good team. God really does close some doors so He can open others.

What I started to do a few years ago is to email the coach before the tryout. Ask what his needs are etc.. Then tell him via email and at the tryout that we appreciate him/her taking at look at DD but she will only attend one tryout. I have never been a fan of a player going to 2-3 tryouts. I read an earlier post on this thread about a coach who saw a kid struggle at the first tryout and then looked great at the second tryout. I am sure that happens.. But I am not running my kid to 2-3 tryouts for a team. If she's not good enough after the first tryout then we will find another spot.
Maybe slightly different as she is a pitcher.
Quick story. Last year DD tried out for one of the very best teams in our area. She showed very well in hitting and fielding. During pitching the coaches barley looked at any of the girls, including my kid. I knew they had good pitching so I assumed my kid wouldn't get an offer but not even a look?
After the tryout he asked 2 out of 35 to stay. One of them was my kid. I was surprised and even more surprised when he made her an offer but not to pitch.
Wanted her for SS/CF. DD is a good athlete but defiantly not an A level SS. I asked about pitching.. He said she can work in from time to time but I am set on my rotation. Then I remember that I did not ask about that one like I normally do before tryouts.
We thanked him but declined and DD is pitching for a better team now. Interesting experience.

I honestly will never understand why coaches have us complete sheets to give them every form of communication we have (landline, cell numbers, email addresses for both Mom and Dad) and then ghost. All you have to do is send a mass email "Thanks for your interest. Our team is now complete." Takes 10 seconds. Why would you NOT do this? I don't get it.

On our team there were two girls HC didn't pull the trigger on at the first tryout. He liked them, thought they had great potential, but wanted to see more before he decided. Make sure they were a good fit. Both came back to a second tryout, and he offered both spots which they accepted. He didn't think they weren't good enough. But we already had 6 and he knew their strengths and weaknesses already, so he wanted to be sure he had a good idea of the other girls' strengths and weaknesses to be sure they'd fill a need. I suppose it depends how much you like a coach/team whether it's worth going back if they don't pull the trigger right away. Personally if we really liked a team I'd be willing to take DD back to a second workout.
