The last tryout DD attended told us straight up there would be no offers made that night.
But by 8am the following morning I received a call. The coach did want a decision by that evening...however, I told him we needed until the following evening as DD wanted to attend the tryouts for her old team just to be sure. She did in fact make the move.

I will agree with the above...it is just right to let people know. Do not drop off the face of the earth! We have never been on the receiving (or non receiving) end of that but we know plenty of families who have. The coach DD used to play for would email everyone who didn't make the team in a group email. Not terrible on the surface - but when you let your AC and his daughter go in that same email that is pretty bad.

When I still did conventional tryouts, we typically had three of them. Wednesday / Sunday / Wednesday, or something similar. That way players had multiple opportunities in case they wanted to go to other tryouts. It wasn't uncommon to see some of the same players at two or all three of our tryouts, and that honestly got them a few brownie points from me. It really helped in one player's case as well. She did not show too well in the first tryout, although I could tell she had a lot of potential. At the second tryout, she blew everyone away. Over the years there have been a few players that I have given offers to before they left the field, but in most cases I told parents that I would call within 48 hours after the last tryout. And I always made sure I called everyone that attended.

Our team is in a different position at this point. Last year we only had three openings and each was filled by players personally invited. No tryouts were necessary. Our 2018 team will be handled the same way.

At every tryout DD has gone to, if they wanted her we knew before we left the field. If they didn't want her we never heard squat. Seems to be the norm in our area where there are dozens of teams and more than enough talent to go around. I wish we knew 4 years ago what we know now, which is to be entirely realistic about DD's abilities. We sure thought she was better she than what she was, but once we got a good dose of reality she has put in a ton of work and now might be able to make any team she tries out for. Now it's a matter of us doing the research ahead of time to find out if the team she's trying out for has an opening at her position.

If I had to offer advice to anyone about tryouts, it would be what I've mentioned - be realistic about abilities and do research on teams before attending the tryouts. You may also stay away from teams that say "all positions open" unless it's a brand new team. That's usually just a way for them to cover their own backside if they find a player who is better than what they already have and they want to "justify" making a cut. It's a sign of a weak coach who would rather cut a kid than work with her to make her better.

update, we hard back two nights later, they want her. she just attended another tryout two nights ago, and we have one more we want her to do in two weeks.

Should I let the coach who made an offer know that we need a couple of weeks because of another tryout?

Should I ask if she is going to be given a chance to play at her preferred position (Catcher, and the worked out Ps and Cs after everyone else left, so they saw her catching)? big part of reason for looking for new team is that on hold team, was one of more talented girls, but joined late, was not part of the clique, so she got moved around, basically was backup C, 3B, SS, and a 3rd or 4th option P. can probably catch thrown balls better than any girl on team, but never got a chance to try 1B (AC's daughter is 1B always).

tryout a couple of nights ago was not impressive. they did 12s and 10s mixed, and after some warmup throws, they had 3 go to hit, rest in field shagging, over 25 girls total. lots of standing around. coach told infield to switch out, but most of them (the older girls, and returning players for this team) would take 3-4 steps toward outfield, then turn around and mosey back in, and it was a mix of 11 and 12 inch balls. same for when then did grounder work, all 12 inch balls. working Ps and Cs was all in left field, no throw downs by Cs. kinda got the feeling team was really only looking for a couple of players, and you had to really standout. first tryout they broke girls into small groups, one on tees+soft toss, one doing grounders+ throws to 1B, one doing fly balls in OF, etc. , did do some live hitting with girls in field, but only 10-11 girls in field, and only 6-8 pitches, maybe a dozen if the girl struggled.

I would be wary of waiting too long if she is really interested. DD had 2 teammates who asked for some time and wound up having their "spots" filled before they got back with the coaches. And a couple weeks is a long time to make some of these coaches wait. I would definitely ask where they see her playing. DD is changing teams this year - and won't be playing her preferred position but she is going into it knowing that. She wanted a change bad enough that she was willing to be a backup catcher and play CF.

DD went to a tryout last Sat. where the coach had all the girls take a knee at the end and talked with them for about 5 minutes. DD said he told them that, if he gives you an offer, he will not wait for you to make up your mind. He will simply move on to the next girl on the list. Keep in mind that the vast majority of tryouts here in GA are either this upcoming weekend or next. So, girls would have to forego those tryouts and immediately commit. I'm kind of glad DD didn't get an offer b/c I don't like that kind of pressure and, although pretty good, this team and org is not so AWESOME that DD would be wanting to forego other tryouts. Although I understand where Coach is coming from, I still think it's a crap move. Having said that, asking a coach to wait two weeks is probably pushing it. Call that other coach and request a private tryout sooner than the org tryout.

A lot depends on the coaching staff and where your DD fits into the teams needs and her abilities. If your DD is a bonafide STUD and would easily be the best player on the team it would probably be pretty quick. If your DD plays a position of great need the response will be much quicker than if she plays a position that has returning players. If the coaching staff is considering multiple girls for one position it could take awhile as they tend to offer their first choice, wait for her decision, then offer their second choice, ect.

Sidebar: Gotta tell a story from when my DD was a second year 12U. We had the best pitcher in our county come to tryouts for our then mid level B-team. She would have easily been the #1 pitcher on our team and made us competitive with a lot of low level A-teams, but the HC decided not to take her because he know that he would never be able to make her dad happy with the amount of playing time and level of competition she would face with us. The pitchers dad was flabbergasted that the coach did not offer his DD a position on the team. I was kind of astonished myself (I was an AC at the time), but looking back it was the best decision for everyone.

Sidebar2: There was another good pitcher in our area who tried out with us 2 or 3 time and we never took her, not because she was not good enough, but because her mother was a psycho bioch and no one on the coaching staff wanted to deal with her.

Thats why he had the tryout in July. Trying to pressure players into joining before the other teams have tryouts. Sounds like he is feeling the pressure.

I think it is reasonable to ask a coaching staff for a day or two, maybe a week at most but that is pushing it. I don't see many coaches willing to wait two weeks. Just my opinion, I could be wrong

I have always looked at it this way. As a player, you wouldn't appreciate a coach telling you, "Well Suzie, I'm pretty sure I have a spot for you, but give me a couple of weeks, and I will let you know for sure." It's a nasty game that we all play during tryout season, and the sole reason I despise this time of year.
