You are in a tough spot. Getting innings is important but having players ahead of her may her push her both in the circle and in other positions. If you believe the coach will give her innings it may be best to go with the team that will force her to compete more for playing time. In 12U we had 6 pitchers and all pitched through pool play and most during bracket. Everyone was getting innings every weekend and it was a win win for the team as a whole. Pitchers got experience and the top two stayed fresh for deep bracket runs. I would say all 6 could have found a home and been a number 1 for some team but the rotation worked.

How often did you guys play and what type of format were the tournaments? With 3gg, you had some very special parents and coaches to keep everyone happy. Most tournaments we will be in will max out around 12 teams.

If my DD's passion was pitching, not sure I would want her on a team with 5 other pitchers. I used the fact that my DD was the #1 or 2 pitcher as a motivator for her to work hard because her teammates were counting on her.

There will be 3-4 pitchers on the younger team as there will be another 12yr old and a couple of 11's coming up. Don't know if i said that or not. So she wont be the only pitcher. Would probably be #1 to start the season, with the others chasing her for circle time. I like the idea of motivating her with the fact that the team needs her. Thanks again for the replies.

The only thing that has kind of got me a little worried in your shoes is the fact that you have mentioned twice that your DD would have a hard time being in the line up as a position player. In other words she does not field well, is not fast, does not have a great arm and struggles at the plate. 12U seems awfully early to put all you eggs into the pitching basket if you go to a 12U tryout with six pitchers and your think she might be #4. All that to say it sounds like your "reach" team is made up of players that are at the next level in pitching, defense and hitting so even though the coach might have offered you a spot it seems pretty obvious she is not quite there yet. In your shoes I would probably stay where i am at but work really hard to get better both in the circle but also as a complete softball player. It may sound blunt but I'm only going off the information you are giving me.

Not too blunt at all. I get accused of not giving her enough credit all the time. She has a strong arm yet wont throw hard at practice or tryouts because she doesn't want to make a bad throw. I tell her to throw it hard until she is told to lighten up. Is a good outfielder and getting better on the dirt. Fast, but when she runs with a helmet on, she is slow. Just not a very aggressive kid. This is something i talk to her about all the time. She has been told by coaches before to just accept that she is going to be good and go hard. I'm beginning to think the team where she will get the most playing time will do the most for her.

I would say that you don't want to be somewhere where there are more than 3 pitchers in your situation. Yes there is something to be said for working hard and proving you have what it takes etc. But with that many pitchers you don't get enough game time to show your stuff. Go with the team where she get's lots of circle time and work work work. And then when it's tough because the defense behind her is weak and she is pitching long innings to get her 3 outs reminder her and yourself that you knew that is what you were getting in to and the option of pitching 2 innings a weekend makes it hard to develop for the long run. All this being said if she wants to be a pitcher as her primary goal.

We are lucky to be in the southeast and played several huge tourneys every year. We tried to play as many two day high guarantee ones that we could. By our second year of 10's there were more than enough of these to choose form in Alabama or the Atlanta area. You are right that playing 3gg would make our way of doing it tougher.
