Looking for opinions about or experiences with offers that come with short deadlines. DD received a verbal offer about 5 weeks ago with promise of seeing it in writing soon. Received it in writing a few days ago with a deadline of less than 3 weeks from now. She is not that close to making a decision. We're thinking that we should play the summer out and make a decision in late July. She has about a week and a half between nationals and school ball during that time.

Surprised any coach would give you something in writing before time to sign the NLI. There is a reason they are called "verbals".

Many verbal offers are made "in writing" via text message or email to document them, however they are strictly with the coach and are not enforceable with the NCAA or school.

I wouldn't call 8 weeks (5 + 3) a short time to make a decision. A lot depends on how much transpired before that (e.g. 2-way communications, campus visit). Their rationale could vary from wanting to close the deal on someone that's expressed a high level of interest to not wanting to lose out on their plan B if your DD declines.

You have to look at college recruiting from the perspective of both sides and you may find some similarities with TB tryout season.

I would love to see one of the verbal offers documented, were they from a D1 school? Can you post or send me one? DD received 6 offers during the recruiting process and while we saw a lot of PowerPoint presentations, we never walked away with more than a handshake.

DD never got pressured to commit from any of the coaches who offered her. One coach told her she was #1 on their list and they had two more to take for that class. Coach did not tell her she had a deadline but did say that if DD didn't commit that at some point they would have to fill the class.

8 weeks is not a short time period. Less than 3 weeks could be. But, I think the real concern is she is not ready to make that decision. After talking it over with her and DW, it seems like we most likely didn't discuss a time frame for picking a school with this coach. DD has been talking with other coaches and does have more offers coming. She's going to tell this coach that she's not ready to make a decision yet and let the coach know about her time frame for picking a school.

I certainly understand that the coach has a list of things to get done. Hoping that coach's response will give us some insight into where DD is on the list.
