I totally agree that there is nothing wrong with expecting effort and with disciplining girls who are not giving 100%.

My original issue was with abusive behaviour toward players - name calling, demeaning, etc.

I think the coach's email demonstrates that he is aware of parent concerns. We have a very good group of parents with very few complainers - but yeah, if someone calls your 12 year old kid a "wuss", I think it's okay for a parent to have a problem with that.

It would be nice to see coaches admit at some point that they also have responsibility for some aspects of the team's performance. Hey, it's not all their fault...but it's not all the kids' fault either.

11-3-1 at this point ;)

I missed the name calling aspect. That isn't acceptable and I would call out a coach who did that.

There are a few reasons why a coach might make girls run. Some good, some bad.

Some coaches have the girls run to build up stamina for summer heat. DD 3 once won a 10u tournament because her team was in shape and the other team wasn't and it was hit by Wisconsin standards

I've also seen coaches have the girls run when team concentration is lagging, but only a short time to get the girls' minds back.

My kids have never been on teams that ran for punishment.

For other sports like track or cross country or rowing my kids would run a lot more.

Sounds like a good team unfortunately the coaches sound like jerks.
One coach like that is too much. You get two and they feed off each other
beating their chests.

DD got her cast cut off yesterday; doc urged caution but things went really well at practice last night. Lots of smiling and laughing from the staff and good work by the girls. Hopefully no more serious negativity anytime soon.

Should be about 6 games this weekend in a local tourney starting tonight. Doesn't make much sense for DD to pitch but it would not surprise me if she is pressed into action. Hopefully can just ease back into the swing of things and get some time in the field and some decent at-bats.

Team on a pretty decent winning streak how; won the tournament I mentioned above (6-0) but we have not played much since then. Kinda frustrating; everyone else around here was going somewhere for the July long weekend but we didn't - lots of excuses but at the end of the day the team has at least three girls with older sisters (including the daughters of two of our coaches) who were off to Colorado for Sparkler/Fireworks.

DD will pitch for the first time since her fracture tonight; hopefully it goes okay. She is the sort of pitcher who needs lots of work to stay sharp so just hoping for the best. Playing a doubleheader against a team we would normally spank so even if she struggles we can score runs against them (unless our bats are too rusty!).

I've found myself, as a coach, in the same type boat. My 16U rec team is 0-2 so far in our league, having lost by a combined total of 28-4 (including one loss of 19-2 in 5 innings. At home. -_- ). What's more frustrating is that we hammer hitting in practice but do less than nothing in the game. We've had 18 strikeouts in these 2 games: 11 looking, 6 swinging, and 1 UC3K.

As a coach, I can't find ways to adequately tell them they need to swing while reminding myself that 8 of my 12 girls are 12-13 years old. However it's a pain watching them go down looking, turn around, and either a.) Shrug their shoulders at me in the traditional "that wasn't a strike (but it clearly was)" pose or b.) Do nothing and walk back to the dugout. I've tried the Knute Rockne inspirational dugout speeches, I've tried bribery, I've tried everything EXCEPT running because I've done it before in previous seasons to bad results. I can't find any other appropriate ways of saying "I told you so" before that's going to eventually come out. Support can only last so far before they can see it's affecting me, but it's affecting me because I'm bothered they aren't caring/focused enough to want it themselves.
