my DD was benched today for missing practice. she was in bed sick. slept all day to where I periodicly poked her to make sure she was still alive. I sent an email to the coach explaining she was totally out of it. not only did my kid get benched , but the coach had a fit about it purposely in front of the rest of the team. my DD never wimps. she played jv boys football. she is a varsity freshman and starter. best player on this lousy team. been to every practice , the coach hasn't! the claim was the rules says she must be the one to tell the coach she cant make it. she had played four days in a row for this coach , sick, in lousy weather. by the end of the fourth game she was shot. went to bed when she got home and didn't get up again for hours and hours. to say she was supposed to arise from sick bed and call in is BS. my kid wont be back to play under this coach ever again. she can finish out the year but that it. to puta rule above a kids health sucks.

So was she benched for missing practice or for not calling in? I've heard of several coaches who will excuse the andense of the kid takes responsibility for calling/texting instead of letting her parents. It doesn't sound too out of line, but I'm not in your situation. I usually find there's other underlying issues and a post here might just be the last straw. Hope things are smooth the rest of the season.

DD was late for school yesterday because she had an appointment to get her drivers license, since it was going to be a game day she told her coach at Sunday practice and followed up with a text on Monday in case he forgot. Our HS coaches expect the kids to contact them with any reasons that they will miss school, a practice or a game. Then they evaluate the situation and decide if the player will be able to play or will be benched. I don't think it's too much to ask for the athlete to call, email or text the coach.

I remember the jobs I've had where I had to call in sick, by myself.

There was one time when I slept until after a completely useless, I mean VERY IMPORTANT, meeting to call the boss, since I couldn't get up before then. Boss was mildly upset about that. After that I made sure to call in sick as early as I possibly could. Different places have had different policies. In one place, I could only leave a voice mail or email if I had tried to contact the manager twice.

There are situations when someone is just too sick to call or email in. Rare, but it happens. And if it happens, a sane person will take that into consideration.

I agree with MNDad that this was probably the last straw for a long list of issues.

Anyway, hacksaw, best of luck to your DD and to you.

I would go so far as to say, that my daughter would quit, now. That nasty flu that is going around is killing some teens. We have a girl with it. The dad texted me that she was vomiting and would sleep all day and try to make the game. My response was "That's OK. Do not come to the game." LOL
