...but if you have a real Coach ...
therein lies the rub.

Good luck MoFin, sounds like you are headed in the right direction.
one thing I have found, FWIW, ADs in my town tend to protect their coaches. so folks who have had issues needed to involve the Principal.

So made some progress on this I think.

DW talked to JV HC with DD. She was told that DD is not the only girl that has come to her and said this. The favoritism is apparent (which I haven't mentioned here, but its with a small group of juniors/seniors), even to the JV coaches. She was also told that the JV HC didn't understand why DD was on JV, and felt that she should be playing up on V over some of the other players. JV HC said that her daughter (also on JV) has also told her about the difference of when the JV coaches are there vs not. the JV HC figured it was just her DD being overly sensitive and told her to basically suck it up. Now that my DD, plus another player have said something, she sees its an issue. She will be talking to HC and we will see what happens. DW told JV HC that if things don't improve, she will take it to school administration on up if need be. We have now had conversations with the AD, that did nothing, and with the JV HC. The JV HC said she is kinda in a hard place to make any changes, but she will talk to him about the concerns. DW also told JV HC if he is coaching next year (AD did tell me that they are going to be "changing things up" next year but didn't give details) that our DD will stay on JV with her (the JV HC). JV HC said she loves having DD because she is a leader, always helping the freshman and lesser experienced players, knows the game and is a good teacher. She also said she loves her work ethic. I was pretty proud of those comments.

Sparky Guy, we have considered her not playing for school, but she decided against it for a few reasons. 1) she is a school spirit kinda girl. She knows that her not playing would not help the team, regardless of if it is JV or V. She feels like if she didn't play, she would be hurting the team. 2) she loves to play and since most travel teams around here take the HS season off, she would be missing playing in March, April, and some May. She knows that the HS team isn't going to get her on a college team, trust me, we have had that discussion. She just wants the HS to be her fun season and then travel be serious. She has fun at the JV games and practices when the V HC isn't there. Our JV normally plays away games when the V has a home game, or they play at the same time depending on field availability, so he is rarely at the JV games. Its just that the limited amount of time that she spends with him at practice without the JV coaches there, is basically hell for her.

Dealing with second daughter playing HS softball, older daughter had enough and told coach she did not want to be part of the three ring circus( stayed on team but did not go out next season). So far this season had been decent, no issues to report. However I am waiting for the wheels to fall off the bus, suspect that might happen when we start loosing more than winning. For the moment I am sitting in my chair and enjoying watching the games, but always vigilant to what is going on with the team. Daughter seems to be having fun so cant ask for much more.

That's all you can really ask for, the KIDS have FUN. Yes, you want to be competitive, but it needs to be fun for them also.

Amazing how many coaches lose sight of this.

My DD 2 and DD 3 were both in the school's cross country team last fall. Thing is, they really go out of their way to make sure the girls (and the boys) have fun. So, they wind up with over 100 girls on the team every year. It is extremely hard work, but the girls have a blast, everywhere from girls trying to get into something remotely resembling decent shape to future scholarship athletes. Even though DD 2 and DD 3 were both injured by the end of the season, both had a blast.

Their Cross Country team did all sorts of things to make the younger girls welcome. For example, my DD 3, being a freshman, was assigned a "Cross Country Sister", a more experienced junior. The two of them regularly exchanged cards and gifts, etc. One particularly sweet exchange -- One time they were going to have a meet in cold weather (Wisconsin, after all). I took DD 3 to a fabric shop, where she got materials for a homemade blanket to keep her "Cross Country Sister" warm. She also bought some snacks. Day of the meet, they exchange gifts. Her "Cross Country Sister" gave DD 3 some snacks and a homemade blanket as well! DD 3 loves that blanket, because of who made it.

Why don't more coaches realize the main point of HS sports is for kids to have FUN?

DS is in town for a couple of days. Needs to be back tonight for early morning practice, so he has to be at college during spring break for practice.

It is so interesting talking to DS and comparing the way his rowing coach deals with the spring break issue compared with the softball coach at DD 3's HS.

The rowing coach was unhappy because last year he only had 2 freshmen in town during spring break, which caused the freshman boat to miss a race.
Strange as it seems, the coach didn't bench the rowers who went on spring break for the next race. Nor did he send out an email to the rowers and their parents talking about how horrible the kids who went on spring break were.
Instead, this year he made much more of an effort to let the freshmen know they were supposed to stay in town for spring break. However, many of the freshmen joined over the winter, so only 6 of the 12 stayed in town. Still, the coach didn't have a meltdown. He understood.

But, this is a coach who has taken D-III teams to the D-I national championships for the past 5 consecutive years, so what would he possibly know about coaching?

And, his rowers have fun.

He must be doing something wrong.

Well, first day of practice after the break. Guess we will see if things are any different. I really hope they are.

I love hearing the different approaches that coaches take, even in different sports, to get the team together. Seems like NONE of that is happening here. There is a page on Facebook that was started by one of the coaches. It only shows pictures and updates of the V team. No mention of the JV team, even when they win.

When the sports pictures were taken by the school, it was both teams together in one group and then the V team themselves. No JV team separately.

Well, first practice in the books for after break. Not sure if the JV coach had the discussion yet. HC didn't say a word to my DD at practice though. Good hits, fielding errors, not a peep. Just rolled his eyes and shook his head when she made a base running error. They were doing game situations, she was a base runner and she thought that they said a different number of outs then what it was, I forget the situation. JV coaches were laughing at her cause she was playing around on the bases, taking big leads, standing 6 inches away from a base until the player would throw the ball and then she would step on the bag quick, stealing like crazy.

2 hour practice, all they did was set a defense and players got to hit for 10 swings. Of course, when my DD goes in to hit, they take out the JV pitcher that was pitching to the V girls and put in the V pitcher. She had warmed up on the side, so no warm ups when she took field. Sounds like a productive practice to me though, each girl gets 10 swings, some live fielding for 9 players out of 23 total JV and V players, few players get to run bases. Yup, they should be real prepared for the game today.

HC did mention again though how the team we play today has a few travel ball players, but our school doesn't because we have a strong rec ball program and school program. Also said that travel ball players and coaches don't work out on the team because the schools program is better. DD told me she had to try her hardest not to laugh.
