If her teammates assisted her she was out, but not if they touched her. With that blown out knee they would have had to assist her. Great show of sportsmanship.

The umpires actually ruled incorrectly in that game. She could have been assisted by other runners, or the coach could have put in a sub for her to finish her base running.

As for the original post, just where the heck are they getting all these umpires that have no idea of the rule? There is no rule about touching the runner, period.

One of the oldest and most persistent rule MYTHS raises it's ugly head once again...

Simply put, there is no rule that prohibits this. It's a myth that just won't die. It's a playground rule that a lot of people "just know" is a real rule because they've seen it or heard about all their life- whether it's true or not.

And yet...not a season goes by where I don't hear this one come up. I frequent several baseball and softball discussion boards and have seen this one come up about a half dozen times already this year. But it's still in second place to the one about a run counting or not when the third out is a base appeal for leaving early on a caught fly ball...

Just like "the hands are part of the bat" or "a batter can't switch sides of the plate with two strikes", it's just one of those old rule myths that have been repeated over and over until some people- unfortunately, some of them umpires- believe it to be true.
