Yesterday at Dd's high school game, she was looking at a 3-1 count, when out of the blue, the umpire yells out the count as 2-2..DD turns around to the umpire and asks for the count again because she knows she should have a 3-1 count. Since I keep score for the team on game changer app, I am well aware of the count at all times. DD doesn't argue because she is very nonconfrontational but this is the second time this has happened to us during this young season...Just venting this morning!

Other night ump called a second strike on the batter, nut usually a big deal but considering the ball was at her helmet and close to the other batters box it was ugly. Then field ump called out runner at 1st who was clearly safe. I try to only cheer for positive things but the strike call and out call was a little too much to ignore.

In DD's league, the 8U umpires are all teenaged girls who play softball but have never umpired before this season. We've seen some flat-out bad calls and some interesting interpretations of the strike zone. One ump calls balls and strikes when the ball is about two feet in front of the plate and won't call anything lower than mid-thigh or higher than waist-high. Sometimes when she calls ball and the player swings anyway, she won't change the call to a strike. She doesn't pay attention and misses things - DD's teammate got hit in the head with a pitch and the ump said she didn't see it so she couldn't award her first. (Our third base coach: "You didn't see it? You're standing right there!")

The girls get mad, but DD's coaches tell them not to worry about it because the other team has to deal with bad umpiring, too. It's a lesson in patience for the girls (and the coaches and parents).

Lol...that's crazy....i would expect better standards, however, from a varsity high school contest between rival teams.

One would hope. But I suspect that the patience that DD is learning now will serve her well throughout her softball career.

We had one Tuesday night that must have had depth perception issues to his left. Granted he was consistent so it's hard to ask for much more. The ball would have to catch the white part of the plate on the right side to be a strike. One the left side it could cross the hole right handed batters had dug in the box. Seriously at least 8 inches off the plate. He did do a good job at calling them every time and calling it very fairly for both teams but pitches that would easily hit a RH batter should not be a strike on a lefty.

I was once playing in a game after the first pitch ump says 0-2.

I didn't think any thing of it until the 2 pitch was strike 3.

There really are times when the folks in the stands could do a better job.

However, the absolute worst umpire I ever saw was a game where each team in a rec league had to have 1 parent umpire. One umpire was so bad players requested he never, ever umpire again. His name was Bob something.

Yeah, that was me. I am perfect in softball. The absolute worst hitter, worst fielder, worst pitcher and worst umpire. Nobody can beat my records! Not sure where my DD 1 and DD 3 got their talent.

Slowpitch?

My DD1 used to ump for the local league. She didn't like it, but she made decent money for a 14-15 yr old. She quit after making an admittedly bad call, but then had the 3 coaches, who she happened to know for years and were board members of the league screaming at her. She was umping a 12u Rec game behind the plate, by herself. She had compliments on her strike zone though. One came from a coach that also coached for the local community college.
