As a coach and a parent with a DD in college and another graduating this year, it has been so much fun to watch all the girls grow up and move onto the next phase of their lives. Some have the opportunity and choose to play in college and that is exciting! From recruiting, through signing day, to actually putting the uniform on for the first time it is fun to watch how excited the girls are. Other girls choose to move on to college or career and I am simply amazed at all the smart and motivated young ladies I have had the opportunity to meet. From excitement about being accepted to a college they really want to go to, an internship they applied for and got, to girls who have already completed programs like CNA and are out there helping people on a daily basis the vast majority of these girls are out there doing great! I talked to a dad of a former teammate of DD1 the other day. His DD played college ball at a CC and has now settled down on a farm with a young man and absolutely loves the life of getting up early every morning, doing chores, and working hard all day. He would have never thought that she would have chosen that road, but she is as happy as he has ever seen her.

I would like to think that lessons learned playing sports (and softball in particular) played some role in developing these young ladies into the people they are today.

I know life is not roses for all the girls my DDs have played with, but it is still nice to see that for the most part the ballplayers are doing a pretty darn good job of growing up!

DD has a lot of former teammates who will be freshman in college this year, so I am anxiously awaiting the start of college softball season!

I walked into a club I am a member at. The girl tending bar was an 8 year old playing 10u my first year coaching softball. She is 19 now, made me feel old.

I talked to DS this past weekend (he was in town for the Lunar New Year).
He was in a HS rowing club in Madison, and several of the people on his club are rowing in college. (So is DS). Also, a friend of his from HS who didn't row is now rowing for Notre Dame, which is in the same conference as DS' school.

DS loves it when he is at a big regatta (what boaters call races), and he can look up some of his old HS buddies. I've been at a few races where he ran across old friends.

For example, last spring he raced against one of his old friends in a local race, then met up with the guy at Nationals (they were in different events), and then a week or two after Nationals they went to an event honoring the alumni at their old HS club, and they rowed in the same boat together. That was really special for him.

I've seen a few stories about DFP girls having similar experiences, competing against their old TB teammate in college, and they seem to enjoy it just as much.
