For those of you that have been there before the rest of us. So DD has been taking PreAp and Ap courses in High School, and we have been invited to a meeting this evening to discuss this Dual Credit and AP courses. It sounds like it might be a good deal...if they school recognizes and accepts it. How about AP? What my kid goes to school out of state?

Pros and cons please and how it could affect PSA's.

Higher academic schools want to see a more rigorous course schedule. I would suggest checking with the academic adviser at some of the schools your DD would be interested in attending.

AP credit varies by school, grade received on the AP test, and the subject.

"3" is generally passing AP test score but some schools may require a 4 or 5 to give full college credit.

And while most schools will give you credit for AP Calculus, they might not for say AP Environmental Science.

Generally speaking though colleges like to see AP classes on the kids schedule when reviewing admission, at least academically.

You can check various colleges AP credit policy here

I know both my kids entered with a fair amount of credits from AP courses getting them out of various freshmen level course requirements but some the test they took didn't count for anything because the college didn't recognize that exam or the score wasn't high enough.

Some of the top private schools do not provide college credit for AP courses regardless of test score; some may waive a course requirement but not count it as a credit toward graduation; some may give college credits. In other words, it varies by school. What doesn't vary by school is having to explain why you didn't take AP courses if they were offered!

The old "it depends" answer. lol.. it also depends on which school wants her for softball too! Decisions, decisions!!! It's hard enough to figure out what's for dinner. So far the kid has a perfect 4.0 unweighted or a 6.5 out of 6.0 weighted taking every AP and pre AP course available. Class Rank #1, but has two years to screw that up. She is no genius but gets her work done in the classroom. We will see what the counselors have to say.

Thanks for weighing in y'all!!

My advice would be to take every AP test she can. At worst you are out the $65 exam fee. At best you get get some college credits.

The depends on the university is 100% the correct answer. However all colleges look at how rigorous her class load was, so AP is helpful. Where my kids went to college they accepted the AP class as fulfillment of a requirement, but it didn't count as credit hour toward graduation requirements

DD has taken mostly dual credit classes (she is a HS senior). The difference between dual credit classes and AP classes is thatif you pass the class you get the college credit, with the AP classes you have to pass the AP test to get any credit. Keep in mind a couple of things: the grade you get on either the AP or in the dual credit class goes on their college transcripts. So if you get a C in the dc class that's what goes on your transcript. Also some colleges don't take some dual credit classes depending on what college the class is given by-so if the dc class is given by a university it is more likely to be accepted than if it is from a community college. My DD is headed to a NAIA school and all of her dual credits will transfer because they are all through a university.

I can't speak to DC, but I'm not sure that's accurate when it comes to AP. It may depend on the school (as many things seem to do), but our experience with our son is that the AP credits he earned in HS show up as a "P" for whichever class the credit applies to in college, so the grade he earned in the AP class doesn't appear anywhere. If he were to transfer, I would expect the new school would want to see the AP test score to determine if that credit would transfer to them.
